AVSL RD 3: VALLEY ATHLETES SHINE AS SEASON HEATS UP

There were plenty of great highlights for the Diamond Valley Athletic Club in Round 3 of the Athletics Victoria Shield League competition. The 75 DVAC athletes (35 Female & 40 Male) produced a final score of 52,792 points to place the Valley in second position on the Premier League ladder for the Round. Going in to Round 3, DVAC was placed second on the season ladder, one point behind Eaglehawk. In Round 3 both Eaglehawk and Western Athletics used their Powerplay to double the points they won.

AVSL ROUND 2 - VALLEY ON THE RISE

The Diamond Valley Athletic Club finished Round 2 of the AV Shield League season at the top of the Premier Division scores for the day and will move into second place on the season ladder. The total score accumulated by the DVAC athletes rose from 37,000 points in Round 1 to 53,442 points in Round 2. The contributing factors for the improved score included the increased turnout, the more local track at Doncaster, an influx of new members, and much better weather conditions.

AVSL ROUND 1 - BRAVING THE ELEMENTS

Round 1 of the AV Shield League season was a wild ride for the Track & Field athletes who faced conditions more commonly associated with Cross Country. The athletes at Aberfeldie had to cope with bursts of heavy rain and wild winds that seemed to peak as Ella Littlehales (F20) was running in Heat 2 of the Female 800m’s. Despite the atrocious conditions, Ella typified the spirit of the 66 Diamond Valley Athletic Club athletes (28 Female & 38 Male) by battling through to a brave finish.

WILLINDA CLASSIC: LAKER'S SUCCESSFUL RETURN

Glenhuntly Athletic Club distance runner, Kaleb Laker, made his third and most successful appearance at the Willinda Classic event when he powered home to victory in the 2024 Willinda Classic 10,000m Open race. At his previous two appearances at the Willinda Classic, Laker has clocked impressive runs over the 3000m distance and in the 2023 edition he finished 3rd in the 10,000m race in 32:28.2. This time there was no denying Laker the victory as he crossed the finish line in 31:27.7.

XCR24 RD 10: TAN RELAYS_DVAC RESULTS

The coldest September day since 2004 and 46 Valley athletes (15 Female & 31 Male) assembled early on Saturday 14th September to run a lap of the Tan. The Valley tent drew a crowd that sought some refuge from the cold before the Tan Relays commenced at 9:00am. Once the Relays got under way all complaints about the cold were forgotten as each athlete attacked the 3.8km loop with full intensity.

XCR'24 RD 9: ROAD RACES AT BURNLEY

The 36 Diamond Valley Athletic Club athletes (12 Female & 24 Male) who took up the challenge of running either the Half Marathon or the 5km distances offered in Round 9 of the XCR’24 season had reason to be satisfied with their individual and team achievements.

VALLEY RUNNERS BRAVE THE NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Eight Diamond Valley Athletic Club athletes competed in the 2024 Cross Country Championships on Saturday 31 August at Symmons Plains, Launceston. Driving to the course from Launceston, the backdrop of snow capped mountains should have been a warning that this Championship would be different.

DVAC SENDS A MESSAGE AT THE 2024 EKIDEN RELAYS.

Inspired by the Japanese tradition of Ekiden Relays, Round 8 of the Athletics Victoria Winter season saw teams of runners take on a number of different stages over a true Cross Country setting at the St Annes Winery, Myrniong. If the origin of the Ekiden was to transmit communication, then the message being delivered by the Diamond Valley Athletic Club athletes would have been that the 2024 Winter season is going well.

GOLDEN EFFORTS ON THE GOLDFIELDS OF BALLARAT

The Diamond Valley athletes who journeyed to Ballarat for Round 7 of the 2024 Winter season arrived ready to face the challenge of the longest race for the season so far. Round 7 of the Athletics Victoria 2024 Winter season was a Road Race set around Lake Wendouree at Ballarat over distances of 6km and 15km. In perfect conditions the junior athletes ran one 6km lap of the Lake while Open & Masters athletes ran a 3km loop followed by two laps of the Lake.

VALLEY ATHLETES PASS BUNDOORA CROSS COUNTRY TEST

Home of the Victorian Cross Country Championships, Bundoora Park is never easy. Set on the slopes of Mt Cooper, the highest point in Metropolitan Melbourne, there is always the challenge of conquering the continual inclines on the course. The extreme winter weather on Saturday 20 July 2024 made life much harder for competing athletes in the later races as runners battled with driving rain, strong winds and a course that deteriorated rapidly throughout the day.

WET SLICKS FOR THE 2024 SANDOWN ROAD RELAYS

The Diamond Valley Athletic Club sent 14 teams out to the Start line of the 2024 AV Road Relay Championships with each of the 44 athletes (14 Female and 30 Male) out to log their fastest lap time for the 3.1km or 6.2km distances. With the DVAC juniors making up 50% of the club’s athletes at Sandown there was considerable analysis of the figures after each run. Despite the inclement weather conditions many of the athletes took pleasure in their achievements.

MCCARTHY fights BLUE LAKE MONSTER TO WIN THE HERTZ

The Blue Lake hill is a monster. It’s 800m of unrelenting uphill agony for each DVAC athlete who attempts the John Hertz Handicap each year. The reward is a similar distance of downhill joy with majestic views overlooking the Plenty river surrounds. But that hill … four times for the 6.44km journey is enough to break the strongest spirit. This year Brody McCarthy, one of the Backmarker crew, survived the Blue Lake Monster, and got to salute the judge to claim the 2024 John Hertz Handicap.

VINTAGE CROP IN THE VINEYARDS FOR VALLEY ATHLETES

Round 4 of the 2024 Winter season set athletes against a largely technical course of tight turns, constant slopes and uneven surfaces as they worked their way around the scenic setting of St Anne’s Winery, Ravenswood. The rewards for the 35 Diamond Valley Athletic Club members (13 Female & 22 Male) who undertook the challenge were found in a range of individual and team results.

ROAD RACES AT ALBERT PARK_DVAC RESULTS

The third round of the Athletics Victoria 2024 Winter season was a road race set on the flat & fast course around the Formula 1 circuit at Albert Park. Racing over 3km and 10km distances in near perfect conditions the large fields of runners, over 1000 in the 10km and close to 200 in the 3km, finished their journey on the track at Lakeside Stadium. The 41 Diamond Valley Athletic Club athletes (26 Open age and 15 Juniors) who raced managed to post impressive individual and team results.

2024 BINNAK BOWL

The 2024 Binnak Bowl attracted a field of 22 athletes for the Open 5km Handicap race and 12 athletes for the Junior 3km Handicap race. Elyse Scheuermann took out the Open 5km Handicap race & Erin Maloney won the Junior 3km Handicap race.

XCR'24 Rd 2: Cross Country at Hanging Rock

The haunting view of the craggy peaks of Hanging Rock and the intriguing mystery that is associated with the place did nothing to diminish the courage and achievements of the 37 Diamond Valley Athletic Club athletes who ran the challenging courses set on the surrounding bush tracks. By the end of the meet, DVAC athletes had claimed two individual titles, two team victories, and strong results throughout the various categories.
