XCR'24 RD 9: ROAD RACES AT BURNLEY

BOWLING ALONG THE BOULEVARD AT BURNLEY

Sunday 8 September was a perfect morning to set out for a long run and the Boulevard at Burnley was the perfect place to run. Just on 1000 runners took to the Yarra Boulevarde to make it a hive of activity. The 36 Diamond Valley Athletic Club athletes (12 Female & 24 Male) who took up the challenge of running either the Half Marathon or the 5km distances offered in Round 9 of the XCR’24 season had reason to be satisfied with their individual and team achievements.

DVAC GIRLS IN WINNING FORM

The Junior results included two winning teams, two top three placings as well as a range of breakthrough performances.

The Female Under 18 team of Ally Brooks, Georgia L’Estrange and Ella Littlehales took out the top team honours in their division. This was the F18 team’s first victory for the season but they will go into the final round of the winter season, the Tan Relays, in second place on the season ladder. Ally Brooks was third over the line the F18 age group, completing the 5km Road Race in 17:34. Georgia L’Estrange, 20:50, and Ella Littlehales, 21:10, completed the winning line-up.

The Female Under 16 team of Rose Jarvis and Grace Robinson were a winning combination in their age group at Burnley. This win guarantees the DVAC FU16 team a season premiership in their age group. The DVAC team will now go into the Tan Relays with a 23 point lead on the season ladder.

Rose Jarvis, 18:49, was first over the line in the F16 age group to take out her second victory for the 2024 Winter season. Rose finishes the Winter season as the runner up for the XCR Champion Athlete in the F16 division by the narrow margin of 2 points. Grace Robinson, 19:48, finished in sixth place at Burnley.

PACK RUNNING DELIVERS RESULTS

With the absence of the DVAC’s Open Men’s leading runners this season, Vincent Donnadieu and Caden Murray, it was an inspiration to witness the way that the rest of the Men’s team stepped up to the plate and worked together to deliver a good result at Burnley. There was definitely a sense of ‘pack running’ with the group that included Blake Barnes, Lachlan Deller, Charles Jacobson, James Telford, Craig Cassidy and Jarryd Cripps. While positions in the group changed around throughout the 21.1km the end result was that the DVAC Division 2 team finished in 8th position out of the 14 teams

The Valley ‘pack running’ was also evident in the Junior Men’s 5km race where seven DVAC junior men came through the finish arch in just over one minute. This pack had been led out by Ethan Armstrong-Bourne who broke away to record a time of 15:58 and finish in 8th place in the M18 age group. Then followed Brodie Batt, 17:04, Joel Imbriano, 17:20, Rhodri Whelan, 17:20, William Quigley, 17:30, Patrick Knight, 17:26, Jett Hollingsworth, 17:54, and Glen Imbriano, 18:04.

Not surprisingly, the DVAC Junior Men’s teams posted solid results. The MU16 team of Brodie Batt, William Quigley and Felix Morgan were placed 4th out of 16 teams. The team of Ethan Armstrong-Bourne, Rhodri Whelan and Patrick Knight were placed 4th out of 19 teams in the MU18. In the MU20, the team of Joel Imbriano and Jordan Rudd were placed 6th out of 14 teams.

DIVISION 2 WOMEN

Mikaela Gray, Debbie McKenzie and Alyssa Nicholas formed the DVAC Division 2 team at Burnley and finished in 8th place out of the 11 teams on the day. Their times for the Half Marathon were Mikaela Gray, 1:30:08, Debbie McKenzie, 1:47:45, and Alyssa Nicholas, 1:47:48. The 8th place will be enough to hold on to 5th place on the season ladder going into the final round for the Winter season, the Tan Relays. A good result considering the absence of Shania Murray who was overseas.

SHORT COURSE SPECIALISTS:

The DVAC Men 60+ Short Course team has stitched up another Winter season premiership as they are well clear of the field going into the final round of the Winter season. At Burnley, Martin Murray and Greg Luck finished in second place in the M60+ Short Course team competition to make the premiership a certainty. Also well up in the placings were the M40+ Short Course, 3rd/14 teams, and the M50+ Short Course who were placed 3rd/11 teams.
