XCR23 Round 6_CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS AT BUNDOORA PARK

Published Mon 24 Jul 2023

THE HILLS ARE ALIVE … WITH GREAT TEAM RESULTS FOR THE VALLEY

It was a happy gathering around the Valley tent at the end of racing on Saturday 22 July 2023. Mobile phones were everywhere but no one was making a call. Instead concentrated looks were studying the Results Hub on the AV website.

“Hey, look … the Men Div 2 are listed in 6th position.”

“What about us! The girls have made it into 4th position in Division 2!”

“Well, the Men 60+ Short Course is still on top of the season ladder.”

“Second in Men Div 5 and second in Men Div 7! How cool is that!”

“Was I in the Men Div 2 team?”

“Not unless your name is Caden Murray, Chris Rancie, Dylan Littlejohn, Blake Barnes, Anthony Lynch or Charles Jacobson.”

“Ok then, what about Division 5?”

“Try Jarryd Cripps, Daniel Rees, Craig Cassidy or James Telford.”

“Damn! Div 7?

“Brody McCarthy Aaron Scot-Dalgleish, Matthew Thompson or Scott Barnes?”

“That must be the lot.”

“There was Aaron Bourne, Brett Maloney, Andrew McKenzie and Rick Clarke. They finished 8th in Division 7.”

“The girls .. who ran today?”

“Division 2 team – Shania Murray, Sarah Leeming, Taylor Radatti and Adina Morrow”

“There’s a tough one – Shania’s 24th versus Caden’s 34th place. Who gets out of doing the dishes?”

“I’m not going there.”

“What are you looking all vague about?”

“I was just dreaming of 2014 when the Division 2 team was Stephen Hadley 45:02.8; Ryan Constance 45:56.9; Martin Murray 47:46.3; Craig Cassidy 49:21.4; Nick Saunders 49:58.8 & Philip Champion 53:09.3”

“Those times are pretty ordinary.”

“Yeah – but it was a 12km race in those days.”

“The Women Div 2 team that year was Lauren Crowe 30:57.1; Maryann Murray 34:28.7; Casey Hamilton 37:37.9; Kerryn Flatt 37:44.9.”

“Pretty fast mob then?”

“Well, the women did run 8km in those days.”

“Who were the other girls that ran today. I keep having to remind you.”

“Well, Debbie McKenzie, Lorna Maloney and Jo Moxon did come third in Division 4.”

“What’s the next event?”

“The next race is the 15km around the Lake at Wendouree on a Sunday morning. That will be a challenge.”

“Yeah, but it is so important to keep our momentum going. If our Men can place 6th again, we could jump 3 spots on the season ladder.”

“How can I help?”

“Offer to car pool. Help others. Ask around.”

“Any new members run at Bundoora today?”

Ella Littlehales in the Women U20 6km and Patrick Knight in the Men Under 16 4km race.”

“How many all up today counting the schools?”

“50. 18 in the Schools (10 Girls & 8 Boys) & 32 in the AV races (10 Women & 22 Men).”

“Second event over 50. That’s awesome.”

“Yeah. Nah. Yeah. We’re up to 94 AV registered athletes in July. Now that is pretty exciting.”

“Yeah, nah, yeah. Any thank you messages for today.”

“What about the DVAC Tent? How good is David Armstrong?”

“I know we were right on the Start area. Better views on top of Mt Cooper! Highest point in Metropolitan Melbourne!”

“You are a genius!”

“Thanks to Lyn Davis and Erin Maloney for time keeping. Anyone want their lap times, it’s all there.”

“What about all that scrummy food. Thanks to all those who brought something.”

“What did you bring?”

“Killer Pythons – gluten free, dairy free.”

“And sugar?”

“Help yourself!”
