VALLEY RUNNERS TURN OUT TO DEFY THE CONDITIONS

A large contingent of Diamond Valley Athletic Club runners turned out to take on the road races at Albert Park early on Sunday 7th May despite the cold and wet conditions that had set in overnight. There were 11 Juniors in the 3km Road Race and 35 DVAC athletes (U18 Men & U20 Men & Women, Open age & Masters) in the 10km Road Race. The total of 46 athletes (19 Women & 27 Men) was the largest club support for a winter event for several years.

The bleak conditions did not deter the Valley runners from recording a string of great results.

Matilda Johnson (WU14) was the only DVAC athlete to win an individual medal on the day. Matilda won the silver medal in the Under 14 Women’s race that featured a four way sprint to the line with only three seconds separating first from fourth. Matilda recorded the fastest 3km time for the Valley’s junior women with a time of 10:31.

The DVAC teams in the Women Under 16 and the Women Under 18 both won their division.

In the Women Under 16, the team of Rose Jarvis, Georgia L’Estrange and Lucy Johns picked up a valuable 11 points for their win that will kick start their season in the teams competition. Rose Jarvis had her first run with Diamond Valley and finished 4th in the Under 16 field.

Matilda L’Estrange, Poppy Scot-Dalgleish and Erin Maloney were clear winners of the Women Under 18 team competition. Their placings of 4th. 7th & 15th produced a total of 26 points with the second and third placed teams on combined scores of 41 and 66. Matilda finished in 4th place to lead the team home.

Caden Murray (MOpen) ran a personal best time for the 10km Road Race, going under the 32 minute mark for the first time with a strong finish to cross in 31:48.

Dillon Vidanapathirana (MU20) probably had the biggest pb on the day. Last year Dillon finished his first 10km in the same race in 59:15; this year Dillon completed the Road race in 50:30.

Jordan Rudd (MU18) brought his 2022 time of 45:28 down to a 42:42.

Ethan Armstrong-Bourne (MU16) scorched around the Lakeside Drive to return to Lakeside Stadium and cross the finish line of the 3km in 9:43. This was the fastest time for the DVAC junior men over the 3km.

Jessica Campbell (WOpen) backed up her good form at Jells Park with another good run at Albert Park. Jessica completed the 10km in 40:28 to be the fastest DVAC female athlete around the Lake. Simone Kuppler (W40+) was close behind and finished in 40:32.

Sugi Neecowen (WU20) & Rhodri Whelan (MU18) showed nerves of steel in their handling of the pressure in running their first 10km race. Sugi finished in 46:56 while Rhodri finished the lap on the track to make it in 38:56.

Peter Van Der Kamp (M50+) and training mate, Dylan Littlejohn (MOpen) were never far from each other throughout the 10km on the road around the Albert Park Lake. Peter finished in 35:39 to be fifth placed in the M50+ while Dylan stepped on the timing pad one second later.

Out on the road, DVAC’s two Club Helpers for the day, Paul Schofield and Max Balchin were hard at work to support the runners. Paul rode his bike to lead the pack out while Max was a Marshall on Point 7. Lyn Davis and Erin Maloney kept times for the DVAC team as back up in case of any problem.
