XCR RD 7 ROAD RACE AT ALBERT PARK

Published Mon 08 Aug 2022

HIGH PERFORMANCE RUNNING ON FAST, FLAT CIRCUIT

With the Cross Country part of the 2022 Winter program with Athletics Victoria over, it was time to hit the roads at Albert Park for Round 7 of the XCR22 season. Thirty two DVAC athletes set off from Albert Road Drive outside the Lakeside Stadium & ran to Lakeside Drive on the Eastern side of the Albert Park Lake. Both the 3km & 10km events returned to Lakeside Stadium where they completed their journey with 300m on the track. There were eight junior DVAC runners in the 3km race and there were 24 DVAC runners that completed the 10km race. The conditions for the road races were near to perfect and many of the Valley athletes took advantage of this to post good times.

TOP TEN FINISHERS

Finishing in the top ten was a challenge given the quality fields that this event attracts. The following DVAC athletes crossed the finish line inside the top ten of their Division.

MATILDA L’ESTRANGE U18 Women 3km 10:37 4th

ALLY BROOKS U16 Women 3km 10:56 6th

BACK ON TOP OF THE SEASON LADDER

The DVAC Women Under 16 team went into Round 7 trailing the team for Mornington by 1 point. After their great showing at Albert Park, filling 6th, 7th, & 10th places, the DVAC team of Ally Brooks, Poppy Scot-Dalgleish and Jamieson Lander, won the Round, earning 11 points and getting a break of two points on Mornington in what has been a battle all season. The girls will go to Round 8 at Lake Wendouree with 54 points to Mornington on 52 points. Go Girls.

LEADERS OF THE PACK

Shania Murray and Tim Logan provided great leadership for the Valley in the Open 10km event.

Shania has put in an impressive winter season, always pushing up at the pointy end of the field. At Albert Park, Shania completed the 10km in 35:31 and placed 11th out of a field of 168. The DVAC Division 2 Women’s team was completed by Merlina Hession, 41:42, Vula Sheens, 44:01, and Debbie McKenzie, 49:06. The team placed 5th out of the 12 teams in Division 2.

Tim Logan led the DVAC Open Men’s team home in a time of 32:02. Tim has been working hard to overcome a calf problem and feels that he yet to hit his best form. The DVAC Men’s Division 2 team was completed by Caden Murray, 32:21, Michael Martello, 34:58, Aaron Scot-Dalgleish, 38:42, Dylan Littlejohn, 39:51, and Rory McPhillips, 40:10.

PB COUNTRY AT THE LAKE

There were many pb’s put up at Albert Park on Sunday 7th August. It is not possible to record all of these pb’s without more comprehensive knowledge of each athlete’s history. The one’s that I can record include the following:

Caden Murray 10km 32:21 (Sliced over 2 minutes off previous pb despite difficult lead up to the run)

Michael Martello 10km 34:58 (2 minute pb & still not fully satisfied!)

Fieke Van Der Kamp 18km 38:52 (First time over the distance but what a debut!)

Matilda L’Estrange 3km 10:37 (Went out hard & held on for a pb)

Aaron Scot-Dalgleish 10km 38:42 (Big pb & 14th place in M50+ Division)

James Telford 10km 37:58 (On a roll of pb’s after the Run Melbourne Half Marathon)

Jordan Rudd 10km 45:28 (First run over 10km – great effort!)

Dillon Vidanapathirana 59:15 (First run over 10km – so impressive)

Apologies to all those I have missed out.

DVAC CLUB HELPERS AT ALBERT PARK

A big Thank You to Paul Schofield and Elyse Scheuermann for kindly volunteering to undertake the DVAC Club Helper duties at Albert Park. The pair were sent out to Siberia ( well, near the end of Lakeside Drive) where Paul filled the role of Marshall and Elyse worked on the Drink Station. Thanks! There are no requirements for DVAC to undertake Club Helper duties for the next two rounds (Ballarat & Burnley) but we are expected to provide TWO CLUB HELPERS at the Tan Relays on Saturday 17 September 2022. Get in early!
