DVAC SLIPS TO SECOND: MINOR PREMIERSHIP STILL A CHANCE

After sitting in top position on the AV Premiership Division for the past six weeks, the Diamond Valley Athletic Club has been dethroned by Athletics Essendon who top points in Round 9. DVAC finished in second place in Round 9, but with Essendon doubling their points through their Powerplay they moved to 94 points for the season, one point ahead of DVAC. Should DVAC win the final round of the regular season they should go into the two week program of Playoffs as the 2022/2023 season minor premiers as they hold a lead on total points of 7,737 before the Round 10 action starts. That possibility should be enough to bring out all the Valley athletes on Saturday 18th February 2023 at either Keilor Park, Keilor or Ballam Park, Frankston.

At the end of Round 9 the top 5 clubs on the Premiership Division Ladder most likely to contest the top honours for the season in their current order are: Essendon (94pts); Diamond Valley (93pts); Eaglehawk (78pts); Glenhuntly (64pts); & Western Athletics (61pts).

The 5 clubs most likely to contest possibility of Relegation are: Box Hill (54pts); Doncaster (52pts); Chilwell (23pts); Collingwood (22pts) & Wyndham (17pts).

The Playoff rounds will be conducted as follows:

Saturday 18th March: AVSL Playoffs Wk 1: Doncaster & Glenhuntly

Track: Hurdles (110m/100m/90m/80m): 100m; 400m; 1500m; Steeplechase (3000m/2000m); 4x100m Relay

Saturday 25th March: AVSL Playoffs Wk 2: Aberfeldie & Yarra Ranges

There was a very positive spirit at Aberfeldie where that bulk of DVAC athletes headed. DVAC athletes generated a points tally of 44,654pts to finish second on the day behind Essendon (52,673 pts). The weekly turnout and the points generated for the season so far are as follows.

TEAM RESULTS

The DVAC Women Under 18 team, & Men 40+ team claimed top spot in the state for Round 9 in their division.

PB COUNTRY

It’s hard to get them all, but here are just some of the pb’s posted by DVAC athletes in Rd 9:

DVAC CLUB RECORDS:

Keira Sanchez (WU18) broke her own WU18 DVAC club record for the 3kg Hammer with a throw of 47.40m. At training, Keira has been landing them out over 50m, so expect further club records before long.

Jaime Hvalica (MU14) sliced 21 seconds off his previous best time and claimed the MU14 DVAC club record when he crossed the line in the 2000m Walk in 7:19.1. The previous record was set nine years ago by Cooper Owen.

Jordan Rudd (MU18) smashed through the 29second barrier for the 200m (old pb 29.26) when he clocked 28.86 to lower his own DVAC club record for the T20 200m.

Bruce Wood (M40+) continued his great season in the field events, setting a new DVAC cluub record for the M65+ Shot Put (5kg) with a put measured at 8.94m..

PB’s

Georgia L’Estrange (WU16) lowered her previous best time for the 800m of 2:35.35 to 2:32.16 with a display of sustained effort. Georgia logged up a second pb with her 32.20 in the 200m as it was her first outing over the distance.

Poppy Scot-Dalgleish (WU16) lowered her time for the 2000m Steeplechase to 8:15.3.

Luella Wood (WU16) set a mark for the 2000m Steeplechase with a time of 9:09.7.

Teagan Corden (WU14) extended her best Long Jump to 3.08m.

Debbie McKenzie (W40+) was delighted to lower her best time for the 800m to 2:58.09.

Riley Neecowen (MU18) is having a break out season & this continued with his 200m at Aberfeldie. Riley was clocked at 23.40. A new pb!

Jordan Rudd (MU18) ignored the headwind down the home straight and powered home in the 200m to run under 29 seconds for the first time. Jordan’s time was 28.86.

Joel Imbriano (MU18) continued his run of pb’s for the season. This time it was in the Triple Jump with a leap of 9.90m.

Chehan Udugampala (MU14) continues his rapid rise in his first season of athletics with DVAC. This time Chehan set a new pb with the Discus with a throw that landed 28.68 from the ring.

Lucy Johns (WU14) joined the growing band of Walkers in the club in Round 9. Lucy set her pb for the 1500m Walk at 8:24.9. She joins other junior Walkers, Jaime Hvalica (MU14) and Max Davidson (MU14) to build a formidable line up in the Walks.

Bianca Eiting-Brown (WU18) extended her best throw with the Javelin to 24.48m. Her previous best distance was 24.43m set on 17 December 2022.

WATCH THIS ATHLETE

Michael Martello (MOpen) has a pb of 4:04.4 for the 1500m. At a recent Miler’s Club meet, Michael clocked 4:09.35. On Saturday he crossed in 4:06.2. That pb seems likely to go soon.

Tara Smith (WU18) recently returned to athletics following a significant injury but she is quickly getting back to her best form. In Round 9 Tara’s best throw with the 3kg Hammer was 39.28m. Her pb is 39.99m. That seems likely to change soon.

Elyssia Kenshole (WU20) is really starting to gain confidence after her lengthy time out due to injury. Elyssia has twice cleared 4.00m in the Pole Vault in recent weeks. On Saturday Elyssia cleared 3.95m. Word is that Elyssia will compete at the Adelaide Ivitational (a World Athletics Continential Tour Challenger) next Saturday. Elyssia does perform well on a big stage, so watch out!

Joel Imbriano (MU18) ran a huge pb for the 5000m (17:18.28) on Thursday evening and backed up with a 4:38.1 1500m at Yarra Ranges on Saturday. Imagine if Joel was fresh what he could do in the 1500m! As it was he was only one second off his best.

WE RELAY THANK YOU

Putting your hand up to run a Relay at Rounds of AVSL can be difficult – it’s one more event in a busy program; it might mean waiting around for another hour; you may have never talked to the other team members etc. Let me say that the positive aspects of running a relay far outweigh the negative aspects.

You get to meet new people & make new friends.

What’s another 100m? 200m? 400m? (Don’t tell me.)

What were you really going to do with that hour? Shopping??

You support your club by earning extra points.

Relays are a fun and challenging event.

Relays appear on the Playoff programs, so please consider.

In Round 9, DVAC put 7 teams out for the 4 x 100m Relays and the combined score from these teams was 1,634 points. That’s 3.6% of our total points for the day. (Check my math, please!)

Anyway, thanks to those athletes who ran in the Relays in Round 9.

DVAC ATHLETES LEAD THEIR AGE GROUP

Going into the final round of AVSL there are a number of DVAC athletes at the top of their Age Division across the state.

ALLY BROOKS (WU16) had an outstanding day in Round 9. Ally back to her best form in each of the three events she contested in Round 9: 800m – 2:16.39 (519pts); 200m – 28.24 (405pts); 2000m Steeplechase – 7:35.4 (498pts); Relay (67pts) for a total of 519pts for the day. By my reckoning, Ally will go into Rd10 at the top of the WU16 Most Valuable Athlete table.

GREG LUCK (M60-64) & IVAN DODIN (M60-64) are battling for top honours in their Age Division. It’s so close that Ivan seems to have moved ahead of Greg with only Rd 10 remaining.

MATTHEW HALL (M50-54) leads his age division at the end of Round 9.

ASHER ANDREWS (MU16) is still only 9 points behind the leader in his Age Division despite being laid up with injury.

COLIN NEWMAN (MOpen) sits in second place on the MOpen season list.

ZOEY RYAN (WU14) in listed in third place in her Division.
