VALLEY ON TOP AFTER AVSL PLAYOFFS WEEK 1

Published Sun 19 Mar 2023

RALLY FOR THE VALLEY: ALL ROADS LEAD TO ABERFELDIE:

WEEK 2 OF THE AVSL PLAYOFFS

The points have got the Diamond Valley Athletic Club 8,364 points ahead of our main rival for the 2022/2023 AVSL Premiership, Essendon, with the final round of the Playoffs remaining. The final tally for DVAC was 57,156 to Essendon’s 48,792. That is a wonderful position to be in, but DVAC will need every possible athlete that can get to Aberfeldie next Saturday to earn as many points as they can if we are to keep our lead. History tells us that Essendon can score heavily on their home track: in Round 1 at Aberfeldie Essendon scored 60,357 points to DVAC’s 49,159. That was with a total of 79 DVAC athletes competing. If a score like that is repeated DVAC has lost a wonderful opportunity to be the Premier club in Victoria.

DVAC had a season high 87 athletes (41 Women & 46 Men) compete in Week 1 of the Playoffs at Doncaster last Saturday. We will need that number and more at Aberfeldie next Saturday if we are to have a show of causing a major upset in the AVSL landscape.

Need transport to get to Aberfeldie next Saturday? Ring the Valley Hotline on 0409 005 406 (Lyn Davis) to organise transport for you.

Part-time work commitments getting in the way? Tell your boss ahead of time that you can’t make it next Saturday.

Haven’t entered for Playoffs, Week 2 yet? You have until midday on Wednesday 22 March to get your entries in. Do it now!!

The Week 2 Playoff program is as follows:

Saturday 25th March: AVSL Playoffs Wk 2: Aberfeldie

Track: Walk (2000m); Hurdles (400m/300m/200m); 200m; 800m; 3000m; 4x400m Relays

Field: High Jump; Triple Jump; Shot Put; Hammer Throw

Entries close @ Midday on Wednesday 22 March 2023

TEAM SPRIT IS PLAYOFF POWER

The DVAC Tent was the centre of operations on Saturday but there were signs of club spirit right around the Doncaster venue.

Down at the start of the 100m’s a sea of valley singlets waited patiently for their heat.

Five of the twelve starters in the Women’s first heat of the 1500m were Valley athletes.

DVAC Club Helpers covered the Long Jump Pit 2 roles as well as many others around the Venue. DVAC members acting in their roles as AV Officials had a strong presence around the Track.

DVAC put out more Relay teams than any other clubs. There were 13 Relay teams entered (two did not quite make it unfortunately) and the 11 Relay teams that did run gathered a total of 2,628 points. Next week the relay is a 4 x 400m and we will need the same enthusiasm to work as a team. The Men 50+, the Women Under 18 and the Men Under 14 all led the points across the state in their division.

VALLEY HEROICS

Adam Scott (M40+) had a serious Motor bike accident last year & suffered serious leg injuries yet on Saturday he tore around the track to complete a 400m in 62.19. A hero for sure!

Jeff Young (M40+) has waited 22 years to win his first race on the track. On Saturday Jeff crossed the line in first place in the 100m in a time of 15.05.

Erin Maloney (WU18) had just crossed the line to finish the 2000m Steeplechase in a pb time of 8:43.3 when she was called to start in her heat of the 400m. Undeterred Erin walked straight across and ran a 71.57 400m.

Joel Imbriano (MU18) had the attention of everyone at the venue as he lined up to run the 2000m Steeplechase. Joel was the only starter and had to run the 5 laps at a time when there was virtually nothing else happening. Joel finished in 7:26.5. Earlier, Joel had lowered his best time for the 1500m to 4:31.6.

Darren Rudd (M40+) has carried a thigh injury for several weeks and was uncertain how he might fare at Doncaster. Darren fared very well: finishing 3rd on the M55 MVA list with a total of 1,095 points. Luke De Biasi topped the list in the M55 age group with a total of 1,243 points.

HEY BUDDY, CAN YOU SPARE A 6.04m LONG JUMP?

What an amazing athlete is Asher Andrews (MU16)! Asher topped the State MVA list for the Men U16 with a total of 1,520 points. Asher produced three results that scored over 500 points: Javelin 47.46m (511pts); Discus 48.89m (507pts) and the 100m 11.41 (502pts). His Discus result set a new DVAC club record for the Men Under 16 with the 1.5kg Discus. Asher’s result in the Long Jump, 6.04m did not score as his other three results scored higher! Anyone need a 6.04m Long Jump? Great work, Asher.

  • Ethan Armstrong-Bourne (MU16) ran the 1500m in 4:15.3 to record a new pb. Only problem – it was 0.3 away from a National qualifier. Great run, Ethan.
