HERE COMES THE VALLEY TRAIN

NEXT STOP DONCASTER

AVSL Rd 1

Saturday 8 October 2022

Aberfeldie & Knox venues

There were Green & Yellow singlets in action everywhere you looked at the Aberfeldie venue for the AVSL Rd 1 on Saturday 8 October. A total of 79 DVAC athletes took to the field of competition across the two metropolitan venues – Aberfeldie & Knox – with 42 Women and 37 Men representing the club. At the end of Round 1, the Diamond Valley Athletic Club had amassed 49,103 points and sat proudly in second place on the Premier League ladder. This was the best turnout of DVAC athletes and the highest score for the last few years. The Valley train is back on the rails!

TEAM RESULTS

At the end of AVSL Rd 1 the DVAC Under 18 Women’s team sat on top of the State Ladder in their age group. The team of Katie Oliver, Olivia Sheens, Chloe Sia, Annalise Jones, Charlee Dixon, Sugi Neecowen, Matilda L’Estrange, Keira Sanchez, Tara Smith, Bianca Eiting Brown & Sophie Compton Cook had a combined score of 8,513, with a handsome lead of 3,674 points over the second placed team from Box Hill. Premierships do follow this cohort of athletes as some of the girls have moved up from the WU16 Season Premiership team from last summer & some have been involved in the recent 2022 Winter Championship team. There is a total of 33 other teams on the AVSL Women Under 18 ladder.

The strong showing of the DVAC Open Women (2nd) & Open Men (4th) teams was a highlight of Round 1.

Other DVAC Team results were as follows:

Women: WOpen 2nd/28 teams; W40+ 5th/ 30 teams; WU20 21/22 teams; WU16 2nd/ 34 teams; WU14 9th/29 teams

Men: MOpen 4th/34 teams; M40+ 2nd/41 teams; MU20 3rd/28 teams; MU18 7th/36 teams; MU16 11th/32 teams; MU14 24th/28 teams

AVSL RD 1 ‘WHOOSHKA’ MOMENTS

Honestly, there were so many ‘whooshka’ moments in AVSL Rd 1 that it is almost unfair to single out a few. But, it was an exciting day for DVAC and a lttle bit of that excitement needs to be shared.

    • Jordan Rudd’s surge in his heat of the 1500m was one of the many highlights in a remarkable race. Jordan still had two laps to go after his surge but he hung on to set a new national record for the T20 MU17 with his time of 5:18.8. With 4 other DVAC athletes in the same heat, there were more moves being made than in a chess match & no-one was cheating!

Fastest 15000m runs on the day for DVAC were posted by Blake Barnes (4:19.3) and Matilda L’Estrange (new pb of 4:54.9).

    • Monica Brennan’s emphatic win in the 1st Heat of the Women’s 100m, clocked at 11.98 headed an awesome team of DVAC women sprinters in the 100m. Other Heat winners in Round 1 were – Katie Oliver (12.53), Rebecca Hvalica (12.79), Maddy Meagher (13.09), Charlee Dixon (14.06) & Kate Ryan (16.98). Rebecca Hvalica is Under 14 & her effort was scored at 504 points! Kate Ryan, W40+, was having her first outing with DVAC. Well done to all our sprinters.
    • Riley Neecowen (MU18) made a statement with his 51.51 400m in Heat #2 of the Men’s 400m. Riley is determined to get under the qualifying time of 51.14 to book a place for the Nationals in Brisbane next April. Jamieson Lander (63.35) just edged out Chloe Sia (63.72) and Sugi Neecowen (63.91) for the fastest 400m for the Valley women.

ASHER ANDREWS - TRIPLE A ATHLETE

Asher Andrews is an athlete you can rely on to perform at a high level across a wide range of event. This is the winner of the 2022 Australian M15 Heptathlon Champion with Littles and an athlete who finished the 2021/2022 season with a total of 9,350 points. Asher’s events included: 100m, 200m, 800m, Triple Jump, High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, & 100m Hurdles.

In AVSL Rd 1 Asher had a big pb with the Javelin, throwing it for a distance of 50.82m to set a new MU16 record with the 700g Javelin. Asher had a remarkable day, scoring a total of 1,468 points from the three highest scoring events that he did on the day. These events were the Javelin (50.82m) 521pts; Discus (45.48m) 491pts; & 100m (11.81) 456pts. The total of 1,468pts saw Asher head the Most Valuable Athlete for the state. Like a true multi-event athlete, Asher also did the High Jump (1.58m), Long Jump (5.70m) and the 400m (57.75) but the rules are that only the top three scores count.

MILLS AND ‘BOOM’

Alexandra Mills (WOpen) started out having a foul day in the Discus ring, hitting the cage no less than four times. A change in her starting position in the ring led to a 38.38m throw and an extra three throws. The three extra throws only applies in the Controlled Event and then only to the top 3 Women & the top 3 Men and only if a qualifying standard is reached. In the extra throws, Alexandra let out a throw measured at 42.44m and a sign that this season was off to a great start. Not only that – but a new pb and a DVAC club record. Well done, Alexandra (& sorry for the heading).

Tara Smith (WU18) was another happy Throws athlete. Tara sent the 1kg Discus out for a distance of 33.19m for three meter pb. Tara’s other events on the day were: Javelin (33.38) and High Jump (1.43m). Tara was ranked fourth on the DVAC MVP points table with a total of 1,254pts.

PB COUNTRY

Sometimes PB’s just land in your lap. Jaime Hvalica (MU14) just missed his chosen distance, the 1500m Walk so rather than miss out altogether hopped into the 3000m. He now has a pb of 17:50 for the event. Brave work!

Matilda L’Estrange had not broken 5 minutes for the 1500m before Round 1 – now she has a pb of 4:54.9. In the same race the Valley saw Fieke Van Der Kamp 4:58.0, Ally Brooks 4:58.5 and Poppy Scot-Dalgleish 5:09.6 earn a massive 1600 points toward the club effort.

Other pb’s on the day included:

Jamieson Lander (WU16) - 100m 13.85

Charlee Dickson (WU18) - 100m 14.06

Alexia Moxon (WU16) – 100m 15.97; Long Jump 3.73m; Discus 12.79m;

Dillon Vidanapathirana (MU20) – 400m 64.47; 1500m 5:40.9

Joel Imbriano (MU18) – 1500m 4:40.5

Ethan Armstrong-Bourne (MU16) – 1500m 4:34.0

Rhodri Whelan (MU16) – 400m 66.64; 1500m 5:11.1

Aaron Scot-Dalgleish (M40+) – 1500m 5:09.1

Georgia L’Estrange (WU16) – 400m 70.20; 1500m 5:52.5

Luella Woods (WU16) – 1500m 5:56.2

Note: Each week there will be a PB Sheet at the Desk to record your pb’s on the day.
