VALLEY SUCCESS AT RELAY CARNIVAL
The atmosphere at the 2023 Victorian Track Relay Championships held at the Doncaster venue on Saturday 25th November had a distinctly different feel to the normal round of club competition or Track & Field Championships. There was a lot more chatter as members of the 24 teams (14 Women’s & 10 Men’s) involving a total of 63 DVAC athletes (38 Women & 25 Men) worked out their running orders and how the baton might be passed from one runner to the next. There was a lot more cheering for teammates that now shared a common goal, and then after the event the lengthy reviews continued apace in the club tent.
Then there were the celebrations that marked the achievements of the nine teams that got to stand on the podium – 4 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze. The Valley ‘bank’ overlooking the track had a large band of family & friends to cheer the proud athletes that returned to the club area proudly wearing the medals to mark their success.
The DVAC entered four teams in the Open Women Relays and came away with four medals. The Open Women 4 x 1500m team of Poppy Scot-Dalgleish, Shania Murray, Matilda L’Estrange and Ally Brooks got the day off to a great start winning the Gold medal in a club record time of 19:35.95. This time meant that the team averaged 76 second laps for the 15 lap race. This team finished in second place in 2022.
At the other end of the day’s program, the DVAC Open Women’s 4 x 100m Relay team created a sense of showdown against the team from Ringwood. The DVAC team of Georgia Gillson, Keely Boyne, Maddy Meagher & Monica Brennan had already demonstrated that they were the fastest combination in DVAC’s history in the Heats, setting a club record of 47.29. There was a feeling that improved baton changes and a Finals’ effort could sees that team cause an upset and win. In the Final, the Valley team did improve their time to 46.47, but still had to be content with second place behind Ringwood.
