AVSL Rd 3: THE TOP FOUR CHALLENGE FOR DVAC

Published Sat 27 Nov 2021

THREE ROUNDS BEFORE THE CHRISTMAS BREAK WILL BE VITAL FOR THE VALLEY

The Diamond Valley Athletic Club is holding on to 4th place in the Premier League of the Athletics Victoria Shield League but we will be facing a tough challenge to hold the position. DVAC has made a mighty achievement in the first three rounds to be in the top four: the next three rounds, leading up to the Christmas break will determine if we can qualify for the 2021/2022 AV Shield Finals to be held on Saturday 5 March 2022 by staying in the top four.

Remember, if DVAC does make the AV Shield Finals then each athlete must have competed in FOUR rounds of the AVSL 10 round season. They will also need to have competed in the events on the AV Shield Final at least once throughout the season in order to qualify for competition.

TAKE CARE WITH YOUR AVSL ENTRY

At least three DVAC athletes were surprised to find they were not listed to compete at Lakeside on the weekend thinking that they had been entered. A common story was the failure to click the Check out button on the Cart. You will get an email if you are entered.

PERSONAL BEST PERFORMANCES

The strong headwind down the front straight made life difficult for the 200m/ 800m runners in Round 3. A number of DVAC athletes still managed to chalk up personal best efforts on the day. There will always be a board at the Valley table for athletes to record any pb they record. The ones that I am aware of are:

Sarah Papadopoulos (Women Open): 2000m Walk: 13:08.3 (18 seconds off the previous best time)

Elyse Scheuermann (Women Open): 800m - 3:38.9; Shot Put 4.89m

Bianca Brown: (Women Under 18): Shot Put - 9.56m (63cm improvement!)

Paula Merino: (Women 40+): Hammer Throw - 19.98m (up from the first time Hammer Throw of 18.21m in Round 1.)

Erin Hanlon: (Women Under 16): Long Jump – 4.74m (26cm improvement)

Asher Andrews: (Men Under 16): 4kg Shot Put – 12.44m: & High Jump – 1.55m

Matilda L’Estrange: (Women Under 16): 800m – 2:29.8: & 200m – 31.44

WELCOME TO THE VALLEY

Zoey Ryan: (Women Under 14): Zoey is 12 years old & attends Viewbank Primary School. In her first competition with Diamond Valley, Zoey put the 3kg Shot 7.47m. Great start, Zoey.

ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!

Not only did our DVAC athletes bring credit to our club, but the hardy band of DVAC Club Helpers absolutely distinguished themselves out at Long Jump Pit #1. Working under the direction of AV Official & DVAC member, Stuart Schnaars, the DVAC club helpers filled every spot for the 6 1hr sessions. Each team needed all four members employed on Spike, Pull Through, Rake & Broom to get the large fields of Jumpers through the session in timely fashion.

A HUGE vote of thanks to the following: Dylan Littlejohn, Bronwyn Meaden, Maryann Murray (2 sessions), Max Balchin, Nicole Dickson (2 sessions), Caden Murray, Adam Scott (2 sessions), Charmaine Smith (2 sessions), Elyse Scheuermann, Stephen Andrews, Greg Luck, Dave Brooks, Vicky Jones, Jane Compton-Cook, Lyn Davis (2 sessions), Jo Moxon (2 sessions), Matt Hall & Kylie Portello.

AV OFFICIALS

As well as Stuart Schnaars, DVAC was also represented by Paul Schofield.

KIRRA WRIGHT WINS THE MARG ANGEL AWARD

On Tuesday 23 November, Kirra & her mother, Kylie, attended the annual Victorian Disability Sport & Recreation Awards in the city where Kirra was announced as the winner of the Marg Angel Junior Sportsperson of the Year. Congratulations, Kirra.

The following morning just after 7:00am, Kirra & Kylie were guests at the ABC studio where Tony Armstrong interviewed them. Both spoke positively about their experience in athletics.

Kirra is also set to receive some practical support from the Cathy Freeman Foundation. A wonderful week!
