CADEN’S CLASSIC RUN AT BOX HILL

For DVAC distance runner, Caden Murray it has been over two years since he posted his last pb on the track. With a nagging hip injury that restricted his ability to train at his usual intensity Caden has had to be content with a limited training regime to maintain a fitness base. His pleasure when he broke through his previous best time for the 3000m at the Box Hill Classic was understandable.

In the C Heat at Box Hill, Caden hung in with the lead pack going through the 1st km in 2:47 before settling in to a 2:52/km pace. In a final lap clocked at 61 seconds, Caden unleashed a finishing burst that moved him in to second place in a new pb of 8:36.27. This broke the pb drought of over two years when Caden ran a 8:40.45.

Caden’s program going forward will include the next Milers Club, the AV Shield finals, the 2023 Australian Track & Field Championships in Brisbane where he will race the 5000m and the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast where he will race the 1500m and the 5000m.

Three other DVAC athletes to record personal best times at the Box Hill Classic were Matilda L’Estrange who lowered her time for the 3000m to 10:20.14, Rhodri Whelan who lowered his time from 10:32.24 to 10:23.05, and Georgia L’Estrange who wiped a whole minute off her previous best time for the 3000m when she smashed through the 12 minute barrier to cross in 11:27.39.

DVAC Open age athletes, Shania Murray and Tim Logan each had a good hit out at the Box Hill Classic. Shania completed the 3000m in 10:06.10 and Tim ran 3:52.33 for the 1500m.

Under 16 athletes, Poppy Scot-Dalgleish and Ethan Armstrong-Bourne, are both close to hitting qualifying times for the Nationals. In the 800m, Poppy was clocked at 2:20.60, and in the 1500m, Ethan ran a 4:18.27.

Doncaster

DVAC Results:

Women:
100m: Keely Boyne 12.08 (0.9); Katie Oliver 12.26 (0.9);
400m: Katie Oliver 59.44;
100m Hurdles: Keely Boyne 14.84 (-0.7);

KEELY’S KILLER SPEED ATTACK

Keely Boyne, better known for her distinguished record as a Hurdler, won her first Open Women sprint medal last weekend when she finished in second place in the final of the Open Women 100m. Keely had qualified for the final by winning her Preliminary round in 12.24. This was her second fastest time for the 100m, not far behind the 12.22 she ran in December last year. In the final, Keely finished in second place in a new personal best time of 12.18.

Four days later, at the High Velocity Club, Meet # 5, at Doncaster on Thursday 9th March, Keely posted a time of 12.08 to wipe the 12.18 off the books.

After her run Keely was asked about her recent streak of great form over the sprints:

Q: Do you plan to run the 100m as well as the Hurdles at Nationals?

Yeh I plan to do both the 100m and hurdles at nationals, maybe even the 200 as I got the qualifier too.

It was super important as it shows that breaking the 12 second barrier is super achievable and that’s been a big goal of mine this season. It also means I could potentially make a semi at nationals which would be a massive achievement as the last time I did a 100m at nationals was in under 17s (4 years ago!!)

Q: What do you put the recent improvement down to?
I think I would put it down to the consistent racing, as well as all the work I did on the track and in the gym during pre-season, It’s finally starting to pay off, at the right time as well!! And I think just every week my confidence is growing. We have done a lot of work on race plans/mindset so all the practice of implementing that is showing results too. In the last 6 or so weeks I’ve gone 12.56, 12.42, 12.36, 12.24, 12.18 and now 12.08

Q: What meets do have coming up?
As for meets, I just have nationals and uni nationals on the Gold Coast, maybe throw in Brisbane track classic whilst we’re up there but that’s not 100% confirmed yet.

Katie off to Nationals

Katie Oliver (U18) has run faster than the 12.26 she recorded at Box Hill last Saturday. Katie ran a 12.20 at Meadowglen in November last year but it was with a 3.5 tail wind. (The same wind that destroyed the DVAC Tent).

“It was a legal pb and I was happy with it. I will be running at the Shield Finals and at the Nationals I will be running the 100m”, said Katie after Saturday.
