LAST CHANCE SALOON REAPS REWARDS FOR VALLEY ATHLETES
Valley athletes were out and about on the final weekend of competition before the Australian Championships get under way in Perth on Friday 4th April 2025.
At the Box Hill Classic on Thursday 27 March thirteen year old Samuel Reeve broke the DVAC club records for the Under 14 and Under 15 age groups in the 800m. Samuel ran the 800m in a personal best time of 2:01.59.
Elyssia Kenshole equalled her career best height in the Pole Vault when she cleared 4.30m at the Rare Air IX meet held at the Melbourne University on Thursday 27 March. From reports Elyssia was ‘only a whisker away’ at clearing 4.40m.
While Elyssia was working her magic at Melbourne University, her mother Gaelyne Kenshole was busy winning a medal at the World Masters Athletics, Indoor Championships over in Flordia, USA. Gaelyne equalled her personal best achievement in the Pole Vault when she cleared the bar at 2.80m. In a field of 16, Gaelyne had to be at her best in order to medal as there were three of the athletes who cleared 2.70m right behind her. Gaelyne also competed in the Triple Jump and will soon set off in the 60m Hurdles.
Kirra Wright, 17, is a T36 Para athlete who made the transition from junior ranks to Open age on the biggest stage of the year, the Maurie Plant meet at Lakeside on Saturday 29th March. Kirra was invited to run in the Female Open Para 100m race and still managed to deliver a personal best time of 15.18 (90.11%) despite the pressure of the occasion. Kylie has attracted the interest of selectors for the World Para Games to be held in India in September for her ability with the Shot Put and she will be working hard to further her progress at the coming Nationals.
There were ten DVAC athletes who competed in the High Velocity Club at Lakeside on Sunday 30th March 2025. Strong headwinds down the home straight made life difficult for the sprinters. Despite this Keely Boyne (FOpen) still posted impressive times for the 100m (12.08) and the 100m Hurdles (14.87).
In the AV Throwers competition, Zoey Ryan (FU16) landed the Hammer a distance of 43.17m and Colin Newman (MOpen) sent the 7.26kg Shot Put a distance of 12.91m.
