DIAMOND VALLEY ATHLETIC CLUB WINS
AVSL PREMIER DIVISION TITLE
The Diamond Valley Athletic Club have won the AVSL Premier Division club title for the 2022/2023 season in convincing fashion. Going into the final week of Playoff competition DVAC had a lead of over 8000 points over their main rival for the title, Essendon. By the end of the program at Aberfeldie that lead had more than doubled to a total of 18629 points. There was a joyous victory lap by the Valley athletes & family following the last event, the 4 x 400m Relays.
The dominance of the Valley team on the day was no more in evidence than with the Relays when DVAC sent out 10 teams at the end of a long day of competition. There were only 9 other Relay teams entered by the nine other clubs in Premier Division – Essendon 3, Eaglehawk 4, Wyndham 2. The 10 DVAC Relay teams were the icing on the cake, adding a total of 2,969 points to the considerable lead already established.
As well as the club victory by DVAC in the Premier Division, Valley athletes have also collected three State titles in the age categories for the 2022/2023 season of AVSL. The three teams that finished the season on top of the State wide ladders were the Women Under 18, the Women Under 16 and the Men 40+.
The other DVAC age categories finished the 10 Rounds of the regular season in the following positions when listed beside their counterparts across Victoria:
Women: W Open 5th/34 teams (3rd); W40+ 3rd/ 29 teams (4th); WU20 26/26 teams (7th); WU18 1st/34 teams (1st); WU16 1st/33 teams (1st): WU14 2nd /29 teams (3rd)
Men: MOpen 10th/41 teams (4th); M40+ 1st/ 44 teams (1st); MU20 6th/27 teams (19th); MU18 8th/36 teams (5th); MU16 21st/36 teams (14th); MU14 21st/29 teams (16th)

SNAPSHOTS OF PLAYOFF WEEK 2
- SPECIAL ‘K’s GET DVAC OFF TO A FLYING START
Keely Boyne & Katie Oliver gave DVAC a perfect start, finishing 1,2 in the top heat of the 200m. Both posted pb times: Keely in 24.67 and Katie in 25.35. A great way to lead up the Nationals over the next few weeks.
- HURDLES NO BARRIER
The 400m Hurdles is the toughest event going, but the did not stop Charlee Dickson breaking 70 seconds for the first time or Jamieson Lander going oh so close to her pb time. Charlee crossed in 69.91 and Jamieson in 67.82. Jamieson later lowered her time in the 200m to 27.10.
- COACHING BY EXAMPLE
Coach, Paul Schofield, put his AV Official outfit away and returned as the fine athlete he is to set an example for his squad. Paul cleared a season best 1.68m in the High Jump. Two members of the Squad, James Hurley (MU18) 1.63m and Ayla Arunan (WU14) 1.28m also pb’d in the heat of Finals action. In the Triple Jump Paul again had a season best of 11.16m. Arunan Arumainayagam (M40+) pb’d at 9:05m.
- GOTCHA BROTHER!
Sorting out the pecking order in a family can be difficult but when two athletes are as talented as Rebecca Havalica (WU14) and Jaime Hvalica (MU14) it is super hard. On Saturday, Rebecca posted a pb of 26.14 in the 200m while Jaime lowered his time for the 2000m Walk to 9:55.0. Sorry, Jaime, but Rebecca’s 200m was scored at 521 points. This was the highest score by a DVAC athlete for the day. Both Rebecca & Jaime will be competing at the Nationals.
- GOTCHA SON!
Family dramas, Part 2. Chehan Udugampala (MU14) led his Sheet results for the Shot Put with a pb of 11.25m, while Dad, Lalith Udugampala (M40+) was placed 4th on the same Sheet with an 8.88m put. Simple? A win to Chehan? No – Dad’s effort with the 6kg Shot was scored at 416 points to Chehan’s effort with the 3kg Shot being scored at 414 points. Close, but no cigar. Chehan also pb’d with the Hammer (28.93m).
- TOP TEN ON MVA LIST
On a day when every athlete gave their very best, the following ten athletes topped the MVA list for Diamond Valley:
(1) Asher Andrews (MU16) 1,434pts; (2) Peter Van Der Kamp (M50) 1,386pts; (4) Ivan Dodin (M60) 1,386pts; (5) Ethan Armstrong-Bourne (MU16) 1,303pts; (6) Matilda L’Estrange (WU18) 1,300pts; (7) Vanessa Smith (WU16) 1,288pts; (8) Lalith Udugampala (M50) 1,188pts; (8) Caden Murray (MOpen) 1,180pts; (9) Jamieson Lander (WU16) 1,027pts; (10) Debbie McKenzie (W50) 1,003pts.
- GOING THE EXTRA MILE …
A number of the DVAC juniors started Saturday 25th at the Littles Centre Championships before heading to Aberfeldie to support the Valley in its tilt at glory. Two such athletes were Jordan Rudd (MU18) & Ethan Armstrong-Bourne (MU16). Jordan did the 200m (28.13), 800m (2:32.25), 3000m (12:12.97) as well as a relay. Ethan did the 200m (pb 26.86), 800m (2:07.00) & the 3000m (pb 9:29.39) as well as the relays. Ethan was listed as 4th on the DVAC MVA list & Jordan 20th. You two are amazing! As are all the other DVAC athletes who went the extra mile at Aberfeldie.
- Team spirit
Luella Wood (WU16) & Erin Maloney (WU18) each missed out on getting their entries for the meet at Aberfeldie in on time. They both appeared at the track in time to run a leg of the 4 x 400m Relays. That’s team spirit.

- THE HANDOVER …
A gracious acceptance of the win by DVAC was on display by Athletics Esssedon at the end of competition. A Crown & Bar Towels were accepted by Greg Luck at the Tent on behalf of the team. It was sport at its very best. The President of Athletics Essendon, Andrew Boudrie wrote to the DVAC President, Matthew Thompson, the following message:
Morning Matt,
On behalf of Athletics Essendon, I wanted to write to you to congratulate Diamond Valley Athletics Club on being victorious in the Athletics Victoria Shield League.
It's a hard competition to win and takes enormous coordination of many athletes, coaches and officials to consistently put their hand up for their club and so taking out the title is a real testament to the great club culture, which was clearly on show especially during the 4x400m and celebrations afterwards. An excellent example for other clubs to try and emulate.
We at Essendon hope that you enjoy the victory, however we also hope that your reign is short lived as we attempt to take the title back next season!
Congratulations again, very well deserved.
Cheers,

A BIT ON THE HISTORY … from Paul Schofield
Well done – we did it!
After catching up with people last night I was reflecting on how far DV has come. I went back to 30 Years ago, when I first went to a full weekend of Association Finals as the equivalent was then. (there was a state election last night, there was a Federal one 30 years ago)
Our venue (Doncaster) had been dominated by Waverley, who’d won all the Open men’s divisions, along with the larger clubs – Doncaster and Collingwood. The Finals were dominated by larger clubs from other venues, Box Hill, Glenhuntly.
It was unimaginable at that time that a club like DV would be able to make an impact on that competition, with much smaller numbers and the constant threat of losing athletes to Clubs like Box Hill, Ivanhoe and Doncaster.
But, over the following 10 to 15 years, Diamond Valley athletics club built access to elite club competitions through combine teams in Winter season (Plenty combine), women’s state league (north East Combine), and men’s state league (Asics, Ultimate, Striders, Yarra combine), retaining more of their better athletes. DV became an integral equal partner in these combines and the club’s athletes brought an improved team atmosphere and approach.
More importantly, during the mid 90’s DVAC built a welcoming club for athletes of all abilities. That welcoming base the club has grown incredibly, initially recruiting athletes from Littles or schools and converting parents into participants, then attracting members from other clubs and centres, becoming one of the largest clubs in Victoria in the 2000s.
But the culture of participation built in that 1990’s expansion has brought the reward of this premiership this season.
So while the 4X400m relays yesterday didn’t quite have the same on track esteem as 1993’s Rohan Robertson v Leigh Miller, they represent the completion of a long journey. And all our current members are benefiting from the work of the club stalwarts that brought us here.
Thank you.
