MASTERS DELIVER A MASTER CLASS IN AVSL RD 6
Published Sun 03 Dec 2023
MASTER CLASS AT TWILIGHT MEET: AVSL RD 6
The contribution of the masters athletes to the success of the Diamond Valley Athletic Club in the current season of Athletics Victoria Shield League competition is always significant, and in Round 6 it was again a reason for the club doing as well as it did. Of the 63 DVAC athletes competing in Round 6 of the AVSL season, 20 were masters athletes and they generated 33% of the Valley’s total score. Six of the athletes listed in the top 10 of the Valley’s Most Valuable Athlete list were Masters athletes.
DVAC finished Round 6 in second place in the Premier Division on a total of 45,087 points, going down to Eaglehawk who won a total of 47,017 points for the round. Round 6 was conducted as a Twilight meet featuring some of the more ‘exotic’ events on the athletics program such as the 60m Dash, the 600m, the Mile and the 2 x 100m Relay. By the end of the competition, most athletes reported favourably on the program.
Heading the masters athletes at DVAC in Round 6 was Luke De Biasi whose personal contribution to the Valley total was a massive 1,634 points. De Biasi, an M60 athlete led all masters athletes in the Long Jump with a best leap of 5.05m (501pts), ran the 60m in 8.80sec (452pts), put the Shot 10.93m (480pts) and combined with fellow M60 athlete, Greg Luck to run the 2 x 100m Relay in 27.96sec (201pts).
Other masters athletes in the top ten DVAC of the Most Valuable Athlete list were Lalith Udugampala (1,291pts), Greg Luck (1,287pts), Darren Rudd (1,221pts), Debbie McKenzie(1,030pts) and Gaelyne Kenshole (1,001pts).
NOW THAT IS FAST …
The highest scoring individual performance in Round 6 was posted by Keely Boyne. Boyne, 21, is having a break-out season on the track and while she remains a dedicated Hurdles athlete, she has worked hard to improve her flat speed on the track in the early part of the season and it is paying dividends. Boyne ran the 60m in 7.53 seconds at the Doncaster venue to head the results across the state. This individual effort was scored at 536 points. Three days prior to this Boyne had clocked 7.42 for the 60m at the High Velocity Club at the Lakeside venue, a time that has Boyne ranked second in Australia for the current season.
Boyne later combined with training partner, Maddy Meagher (U16) in the 2 x 100m Relay to provide one of the highlights of the evening as Boyne stormed down the home straight half a length clear of the rest of the field in the first heat. The team covered the 200m in 24.80. Meagher had earlier run the 60m in 8.07 to earn 518 points. The same team had clocked 24.35 at the HVC meet.
Rebecca Hvalica (U16) joined the 500 club with her time in the 60m sprint. Hvalica was clocked at 8.13 (512 points). Jamie Ritchie (U14) covered the 60m in 8.59 to attract 485 points. Jamie won Gold in the 200m & Silver in the 100m at the Australian Schools Track & Field Championships (12Yrs & Under) in Launceston last weekend. Rebecca will be competing at the Australian Schools Track & Field Championships (U14 to U20) in Perth next weekend.
BACK TO THE IMPERIAL MILE
The depth of DVAC stocks in women’s middle distance running was highlighted when four DVAC women lined up in the first heat of the Mile. After an absorbing battle for position between the four it was Erin Maloney (U18) who led the team home in 5:27.70. Then followed Georgia L’Estrange (U16) in 5:28.44, Simone Kuppler (40+) in 5:31.99 and Rose Jarvis (U16) in 5:33.82.
Ethan Armstrong-Bourne (U16) led the DVAC men led the DVAC men’s times over the Mile running 4:43.32. He was followed closely by Blake Barnes (Open) 4:46.15 and Jarryd Cripps (Open) in 5:00.96. Jarryd was applauded for his ability to keep jetlag at bay after returning from Europe less the 24 hours earlier. Even more remarkable, he later ran the 600m in 1:31.10 to lead the times for the DVAC men.
TUNING UP FOR PERTH
Walks athletes, Jaime Hvalica (U14) and Lucy Johns (U16) took advantage of the 2000m Walk on the program for Round 6 to further hone their skills before heading off to Perth next week for the Australian Schools Track & Field Championships. Both topped the state for AVSL Round 6 in their age group with Jaime Havilica completing the 2000m Walk in 10:19.7 and Lucy Johns crossing in 10:40.15.
