TRACK SCORCHING AND HIGH FLYING BEFORE OUR ‘GATHER ROUND’

Forget about the AFL ‘Gather Round’ in Adelaide this week – the real action is set to get under way with the 2024 Australian Track & Field Championships in Adelaide from Thursday 11th April until Friday 20th April 2024. Athletes from all over the nation will converge on the SA Athletics Stadium for the nine days of competition and there will be 32 DVAC athletes in the number.

The lead up Specialist Meets in the past week could not have gone better for the DVAC athletes taking part. These meets included the Box Hill Classic on Thursday 4th April and the High Velocity Club #6, the AV Throwers #5 and the Rare Air (Pole Vault) #8 all on Saturday 6th April.

Four DVAC club records and a number of personal best performances have been set at the Specialist Meets held over the last week.

IS IT A BIRD? IS IT A PLANE? NO … IT’S ELYSSIA

Elyssia Kenshole had the perfect lead up to the Nationals … a new pb. Three years ago Elyssia set the Open Women’s DVAC club record at 3.26m. After the comp at Lakeside last Saturday it sits at 4.30m. Elyssia takes up the story about how this happened:

“I started at 3.90 cleared first attempt (the highest I’ve ever started before) then went to 4.00 cleared first attempt, then 4.10 cleared second attempt and finally 4.30 on second attempt. There were so many emotions after clearing 4.30 because it’s been a long time coming. My first pb in over 3 years and post-surgery which is a huge milestone for me and Bill. So didn’t attempt another height. Saving it for Nationals 😉

“Was a really exciting comp with my progression with poles too. I went through 6 poles within the warm up and the comp and was on my biggest pole ever, so there are more pbs than just jumping the height.”

“I’ll be competing in Adelaide on Thursday the 11th for the qualification and hopefully Saturday the 13th for the final.”

“Wishing everyone the best for nationals.”

ASHER ANDREWS IS NOW A POLE VAULT RECORD HOLDER

Asher Andrews originally took on the Pole Vault event because he was keen to compete in the Decathlon. At the 2023 Australian Championships, Asher was only 50 points off a podium position when his points total for the Decathlon was 6,069 points. In the Pole Vault, Asher cleared 3.00m at those Championships. As of this week, Asher now boasts of a Pole Vault pb of 3.65m – setting a DVAC club record for the MU18, 19 & 20.

There’s got to be over 50 points in that improvement!

WHO IS THE FASTEST MAN AT THE VALLEY? … SAYE MORRIS

Since 2017 Nathan Riali has held the title of “Fastest Man at the Valley’. The DVAC Club record set by Nathan stood at 10.69.

At the High Velocity Meet # 6 Saye Morris flew down the track at Lakeside Stadium in a time of 10.65 to claim the DVAC record.

This lowered Saye’s previous best time of 10.70 and is the perfect achievement to set off to Adelaide for the Nationals with a spring in his step.

16.23m WITH A 5KG SHOT? 15 YRS OLD? ARE YOU SERIOUS? ASK PAORA OKIRUA.

At the 2023 Nationals, Paora Okirua won the Men Under 16 Shot Put (4kg) with a clutch effort of 17.62m on his final attempt.

This year Paora moves up to the 5kg weight & the signs are good. On Saturday, Paora put the 5kg Shot 16.23m and claimed the DVAC record for the MU16 that had stood for 17 years.

SPRINTERS SHINE AT LAKESIDE

A highlight of the High Velocity Club #6 meet at Lakeside was the great form of the Valley sprinters.

Keely Boyne lowered her best time for the 100m to 11.67 (2.0) and won the top Heat of the 100m Hurdles. Keely has gone under 12 seconds for the 100m at 8 of her last 12 100m races.

Rebecca Hvalica and Jamie Ritchie pushed each their along in their heat of the 100m finishing first and second. Both girls came away with new pb’s – Rebecca, 12.41 and Jamie, 12.62.

PB’s & an A Qualifier at Box Hill Classic

There were some fantastic break through efforts at the Box Hill Classic on Thursday 4th April 2024.

Ethan Armstrong-Bourne opened the night up by dropping his previous best 800m time by three seconds. Ethan crossed in 2:01.59, smashing the previous best time of 2:04.32.

Jaryd Clifford got an A Qualifier for the Para World Championships & Para Olympics when he surged home in the final lap of the A Heat of the 1500m to finish in 3:48.38.

Joel Imbriano lowered his best time for the 3000m from 9:41.0 to 9:32.80 when he stuck close to the green lights for most of the race and finished strongly over the final stages.

Glen Imbriano led from start to finish in his heat of the 3000m to claim a cash reward and record a 30 second pb. From a previous best time of 11:02.89, Glen finished his 3000m at Box Hill in 10:32.22.
