DVAC HOLDS TIGHT IN AVSL ROUND 7

The AVSL Round 7 action on Saturday 11th January 2025 took part for the most part at the Meadowglen and Frankston venues in hot and humid conditions. When the final scorecard was posted, the Diamond Valley Athletic Club had finished in second position for the round to consolidate its season ladder position in the Premier Division. The Eaglehawk team had confirmed its position on top of the ladder, scoring 47,395 points to the 43,696 points scored by the Valley. A total of 61 DVAC athletes (28 Female & 33 Male) competed in Round 7 with most of the Valley athletes based at the Meadowglen venue. Saye Morris ran a great 100m clocked at 10.52 at Geelong with a wind reading of 2.6. Toby Hamilton set a new DVAC club record for the M15 & M16 age groups with a clearance over 1.94m in the High Jump.

The final three rounds of the AVSL season has much to offer the DVAC athletes as a number of the age division teams battle it out for top season honours.

F Open:

Went in to Round 7 in 10th position on the Ladder & should still be around that mark after the two members of the team at Meadowglen scored 1076 points. Bring up the reinforcements! Sarah Papadopoulos & Lucinda Derrett covered the Discus, Javelin & Walks events while Meg Nicholls, Tara Smith, Vanessa Smith & Mackenzie Genders completed the 4 x 100m Relay in 62.31.

FU20:

SOS … Tara Smith needs assistance! Tara’s 1030 points still put the team in 11th place for the Round but the team should still hold on the 3rd place on the season ladder.Tara scored points in four events, including a 33.23m Javelin throw, as well as running a leg for the FOpen 4x100m Relay team.

FU18:

A great result in Rd 7 saw the DVAC FU18 team win the round by 1564 points over Season Ladder leaders, Eaglehawk. Still in second place on the season ladder but the DVAC FU18 team now close the margin behind Eaglehawk to a mere 201 points. If ever a team needed all hands on deck in Round 8 it is the DVAC FU18 team!

Elisha Blair can truly claim her pb in the 100m with a time of 12.81 (0.8), but Maddy Meagher had a tailwind of 2.7 when she ran her fastest 100m time of 12.44!

Vanessa Smith provided great leadership taking on a busy schedule and achieving consistently good results in the Javelin, High Jump, Long Jump, Discus and a Relay. Vanessa ranked third on the DVAC MVA list with 1,113 points.

FU16:

This is a two way race between the DVAC girls & Essendon. Before Rd 7 the DVAC team led by the slender margin of 54 points, but after Round 7 we trail Essendon by 914 points. Liv Nichols led the points tally in Round 7 accumulating 1096 points.

FU14:

Three good news stories with the DVAC FU14 team at Meadowglen. Firstly, how good it was to see Liezel Cilliers back in competition after a lengthy break due to injury. Clearing 1.44m on her return sets up exciting lead up to the Championship season. Eadie Raso continued her streak of 400m runs in the 69second mark and this week she crossed in 69.74. Jamie Ritchie led all comers in the FU14 division with a 12.50 100m.

F40-49:

The mighty DVAC trio of Meg Nicholls, Victoria Lindores and Lori McLeod-Mills was too much for the opposition in Round 7 and their win extends their lead on the season Ladder. The three athletes covered 9 event entries between them: ten if you count the FOpen relay in which Meg ran the first leg..

F50-59:

The DVAC F50-59 team went into this round on top of the ladder. Great work was done by Gaelyne Kenshole & Sarah Gittins in Rd 7 to finish in third place for the Round. Gaelyne led the Division in the Long Jump with a distance of 3.83m. South Bendigo threw everything into this round and they have emerged with a narrow lead (102 points by my reckoning) so the call out goes to the other three members of the team to try & get the lead back in Round 8.

F60+:

Jo Moxon and Michelle King scored points in seven events between them and still had the energy to contribute to the DVAC F50+ Relay team! The DVAC team finished 5th in Round 7 and they went into the round in 8th place on the season ladder.

M Open:

The four man team finished 10th in Round 7 but was sitting 5th on the season ladder. Saye Morris ran the 100m in 10.52, clearly under his own club record of 10.65 but that +2.6 wind robbed Saye of a new record! Hayden Moon, 11.77, & Dillon Vidanapathirana, 12.94, both opened their accounts for 2025 with strong runs. Dillon later posted a 59.78 for the 400m and both he & Hayden joined up with Asher Andrews and James Hurley for the DVAC 4x100m Relay where they were edged out by the Preston team for venue honours. Their time was 45.34.

MU20:

Four of the six DVAC MU20 team made their way to Meadowglen & scored enough points to place them 5th in their Division for Round 7 which is where they appear on the season ladder. Busiest athletes were Jordan Rudd, whose workload included the Long Jump (4.42m), 1500m (5:13.98), and 400m (60.03) and James Hurley who tackled the 100m (12.44), Long Jump (5.76m), and High Jump (1.44m). James finished on 999 points for the day to rank 7th in the MU20. rHarley Gilbert and Rowan Fletcher completed the busy line-up.

MU18:

The four member DVAC MU18 team that competed in Round 7 finished in 10th position out of the 33 teams in AV. Asher Andrews led the points tally for the team with his 100m (11.51) scored at 407 points and his personal best effort in the High Jump (1.84m) scored at 395 points. Add to that the 90 points Asher was awarded for the Open Men’s Relay. Joshua Fitzgerald (4:24.32) and Thomas Short (4:33.27) ran strong races in the first heat of the Men’s 1500m. Rhodri Whelan ran the 200m & 3000m at the Frankston venue.

MU16:

Season Ladder leaders before Round 7, the DVAC MU16 team will extend its lead with a good win in their age group on Saturday. That win came from the efforts of 5 members of the DVAC MU16 team of 21 athletes! Of course, it helps when Toby Hamilton leads the score sheet with pb’s in the High Jump, 1.94m, and the Javelin, 45.06m as well as a best Long Jump measured at 5.65m. Toby’s total points tally of 1,212 put him as second best for all MU16 in the state and top of the DVAC MVA list. Chehan Udugampala was at usual high standard in the Javelin, 38.60m, Discus, 35.05m, and Long Jump, 4.48m. Charlie Cooper pulled out pb’s in the 100m, 12.55, and the 400m, 56.24. To add to the pb party, both Harvey McGregor, 12.45, and Christos Kozaris, 12.49, pushed themselves to new best times in the 100m.

MU14:

Jesse Porter flew the flag for the DVAC MU14 team and ran his second fastest 100m in 13.49. The DVAC MU14 team went into Rd 7 in 14th position on the season ladder & will remain in a similar position.

M40-49:

The DVAC M40+ team finished in second position behind Eaglehawk and ahead of 25 other teams in Round 7, a result that further confirms the season ladder positions. Four members of the DVAC team list, Cyrus Wong, Damien Cusack, Arunan Arumainayagam and Colin Newman amassed a total of 2,796 points from the 13 event entries they fielded. Arunan Arumainayagam posted personal best performances in the Hammer Throw (22.31m) and the Shot Put (8.01m). Colin Newman led the M40+ results in the Hammer Throw with a best effort of 36.78m. There was little to separate the points tally across the team with Arunan leading on 761followed by Damien Cusack (696), Colin Newman (659) and Cyrus Wong (649).

M50-59:

This Division premiership is going down to the wire. The 388point lead held by Eaglehawk over the DVAC team before Round 7 has been whittled down to 188 points after an invaluable Division win on Saturday by the five member squad that took part in the program at Meadowglen.

Lalith Udugampala led all comers in the M50-59 Division in both the 100m (12.45) and the Long Jump (5.15m) and was ranked second in the Discus (31.36m). As well, Lalith teamed up with Adam Scott, Matthew Hall and Jeff Young to field a team in the 4x100m Relay. In the Discus results the DVAC team filled 2nd (Lalith udugampala), 3rd (Matthew Hall) and 4th (David Hvalica) places. Adam Scott ran the second fastest 400m (59.11) for the M50+ division.

A memorable win and lots of excitement to follow.

M60+:

The talented line-up of Luke De Biasi, Bruce Wood, Greg Luck, Lyal Douglas and Bernie Keirl emerged from Round 7 on top of the M60+ ladder. They will still remain in third position on the season ladder, but they have edged closer to the Collingwood and Western Aths teams in the M60+. Luke De Biasi led the points tally for the team with 982 and was ranked 6th in the Division. The combination of Greg Luck, Luke De Biasi, Bruce Wood and Lyal Douglas reigned supreme in the 4 x 100m relay with a time of 66.62. In the 400m, Lyal Douglas headed the rankings for his favourite event with a time of 71.84 (281 points). Luke De Biasi headed the M60+ rankings for the Discus with a best throw of 34.82 (311 points).
