VALLEY PARA ATHLETES LEAD THE WAY AT VIC ALL SCHOOLS WK#1

Week 1 of the 2022 Victorian All Schools Track & Field Championships was a showcase for the talent possessed by the junior athletes at the Diamond Valley Athletic Club. On a wet and windy weekend when the conditions were never easy, the Valley athletes still managed to perform at their best against tough opposition. In all, the 29 juniors (21 Girls & 8 Boys) managed to win a total of 17 medals over the two days of the Championships. The three DVAC Para athletes competing, Ava Campbell, Kirra Wright and Jordan Rudd, managed to win 9 of the 17 medals. There were many other athletes who came away from the Championships happy that they had posted new personal best performances in the heat of Championship competition.

Ava Campbell (T54 & F54) (W14) had a remarkable degree of success in the four events in which she competed. Ava won Gold in the 1500m (6:40.03), Silver in the Shot Put (3.59m) and Bronze in the 100m (21.27) and 400m (82.79). The Montmorency Secondary College student set new Australian records for the T54 & F54 Under 15 classification in all four events.

Kirra Wright (T38) (Assumption College) lowered the Australian Under 15 record for the 100m, with a new personal best time of 15.36. Kirra was just outside her national record of 1:17.24 in the 400m when she was clocked at 1:17.87. Something special happened in the Shot Put when Kirra extended her personal best effort of 6.89m out to 8.20m at Lakeside. Kirra won Gold in all three events.

Jordan Rudd (T20) (Concord School) had tough competition in the 1500m and 400m, and while he managed to cross the line in first place he had to settle for the Silver medal in both events. His response to the competition was a model for any athlete – he worked harder than ever before and sliced a chunk of time off his previous pb in each distance. In the 1500m, Jordan lowered his own Australian record to 5:12.17 and in the 400m, Jordan ran the race of his life to cross in 64.47.

Keira Sanchez (W17) (Loyola College) broke a long standing DVAC club record in the Shot Put when she landed a put with the 3kg Shot at 11.94m. This mighty effort placed Keira in 4th place. Keira enjoyed another big breakthrough effort with her performance in the Discus:Keira’s best Throw was measured at 36.87m and this gave her the Gold medal. As if that were not enough, Keira also worked at the Discus on Sunday as a Cadet AV Official.

Katie Oliver (W17) lowered her best time for the 100m to 12.34 in the Heats and backed it up with the same time in the final to finish in third place. This time was well under the qualifying time for Nationals.

Asher Andrews (M16) (Plenty Valley Christian College) competed in the 100m, Discus and Shot Put and set new personal best marks in each event. Asher now has a best time of 11.43 for the 100m, a best distance with the Discus of 48.51m (2nd Place) and a best distance of 14.17m with the Shot Put (3rd place).

Maddy Meagher (W15) (Eltham College) lowered her time for the 100m to 12.49 to place second in the final.

Rebecca Hvalica (W14) (Ivanhoe Grammar) continued her great form this season with a personal best effort of 12.63 in the Heat of the 100m and then continued through the Semi (12.85) to finish second in the Final with 12.76.

Ally Brooks (W16) (Eltham High School) was a convincing winner in the W16 2000m Steeplechase, crossing in 7:22.60.

Fieke Van Der Kamp (W20) (Eltham High School) led the 1500m field from the start with brave running and managed to break the pack down to two over the last 600m. Fieke was overtaken in the home straight and crossed in second place in 4:58.34.
