CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR THE VALLEY: FINALS CHALLENGE AWAITS

The Diamond Valley Athletic Club goes into the Christmas break sitting on top of the Premier Division ladder eight points clear of Eaglehawk & eleven points clear of Essendon after an outstanding performance over the first seven rounds of the 2022/ 2023 Shield competition. There remain three rounds of the regular AVSL season followed by two programs of the AVSL Playoffs.

The remaining dates of the AVSL season are:

Saturday 21 January 2023: AVSL Rd 8 Doncaster & Murrumbeena

Saturday 4 February 2023: AVSL Rd 9 Aberfeldie & Yarra Ranges

Saturday 18 February 2023: AVSL Rd 10 Keilor & Frankston

Saturday 18 March 2023: AVSL Playoffs Doncaster & Glenhuntly

Saturday 25 March 2023: AVSL Playoffs Aberfeldie & Yarra Ranges

Each athlete must have competed in at least THREE Rounds of the AVSL season before the Playoffs & must have a ranking in each event they wish to compete in at the AVSL Playoffs. There is a full range of events over the two weeks of the Playoffs so it is well work examining the programs and then making sure that you can take part in at least three events over the two weeks of the Playoffs.

DVAC had 64 athletes (33 Women & 31 Men) compete in AVSL Round 7 on Saturday 17 December 2022. There was a very positive spirit at Aberfeldie where that bulk of DVAC athletes headed. DVAC athletes generated a points tally of 45,071 to finish second on the day behind Essendon (55,026 points). The result does highlight the need for DVAC to have good turnouts for the remaining rounds in order to generate sufficient points to be competitive when it counts. The weekly turnout and the points generated for the season so far are as follows.

AVSL Playoffs & Promotion/Relegation

AVSL Playoffs this year will take place across 2 consecutive weekends held at 5 venues (3 Country & 2 Metro) across Victoria allowing athletes to compete and contribute points in their nominated events.

Each club and athlete will have something to play for during the AVSL Playoffs this year with the top 5 teams in each division playing off for the AVSL divisional Shield. The bottom 5 teams in Division 1 through to 4 will competing to avoid relegation.

Across the two weekends of playoffs, athletes will be able to contribute points in 3 individual events and 1 relay on weekend 1 and weekend 2. This new format of Playoffs will allow greater opportunity for participation and incentive to compete for success, survival or relegation!

The Playoffs will be held at Doncaster & Glenhuntly on Saturday 18th March 2023 & at Aberfeldie & Yarra Ranges on Saturday 25th March 2023. To compete in both programs athletes must have a ranking (ie have done that event at least once). The draft Timetables for the Playoffs are now available on the AV website.

ASHER’S CRUSADE

You may not have noticed but Asher Andrew’s Dance Card was completely full at Aberfeldie. If he looked exhausted at the end of the day, it was because he had completed no less than SEVEN events. Asher had the following results in Round 7: Javelin 49.17m (518 points); 100m Hurdles 14.83; Discus 43.74m; 1500m 5:03.1; 100m 11.57 (484 pts); Long Jump 6.13m (480 pts) & 400m 56.87. Note: you only get to score on THREE events.

So why is Asher doing all these events? On Saturday 14 January 2023, Asher will be competing in the Victorian Decathlon Championships for Men Under 18 at the Bendigo Athletics Centre. This is Asher’s workload for the weekend:

Saturday 14 January 2023: 9:50am – 100m; 10:35am – Long Jump; 12:00pm – Shot Put; 1:30pm – High Jump; 3:15pm – 400m

Sunday 15 January 2023: 10:15am – 110m Hurdles; 11:25am – Discus; 1:15pm – Pole Vault; 3:15pm – Javelin; 4:45pm – 1500m

Asked yesterday which of the 10 events he finds most difficult, Asher did not hesitate to say, the 1500m. Asher ran a pb 5:03 yesterday, but I’m sure that he could take a bit more time off that if needed.

In AVSL Round 7, Asher headed the MVA list for DVAC with a total of 1,482 points.

Good luck at Bendigo, Asher.

ERIN’S IN A HURRY

The list of pb’s logged in Round 7 included a number of dramatic improvements, but none more so than Erin Maloney (WU18). Erin is in her first season of Athletics and is making rapid progress. In Round 7 Erin clocked 15.10 for the 100m at her first attempt; lowered her time for the 400m from 77.2 to 70.24 and in the 1500m Erin crossed the finish line in 5:18.2 despite having a previous best time of 5:36.1.

The only other athlete to match this improvement was Dillon Vidanapathirana (MU20) who took his pb from 5:40.9 to 5:22.9.

FIRST AID CORNER

McKenzie Genders (WU16) landed awkwardly in the Long Jump at Aberfeldie last Saturday and hurt her ankle. There were fears that she may have suffered serious damage so on the advice of the First Aid officers, McKenzie was taken to the Children’s Hospital. After a thorough check-up it appears at there is no structural damage. Still, a painful ordeal. We wish McKenzie a speedy recovery.

Adam Scott (M40+) definitely won the Courage Award in AVSL Rd 7. Earlier this year Adam suffered a badly broken leg after Motor Bike accident. Although Adam is still a long way from a full recovery, he chose to compete in Round 7 in order to assist with his qualifying for the AVSL Playoffs. Adam, we salute your courage.

Peter Van Der Kamp (M40+) has been staving off a hamstring problem in recent times, but at the 250m mark of the 400m on Saturday, it gave him another reminder that it had not gone away. Bravely, Peter still completed the 400m.

ZATOPEK 10

Fieke Van Der Kamp (WU20) had a significant breakthrough run in the Lisa Ondieki Under 20 Women’s 3000m race at the Zatopek 10 meet last Thursday night. Fieke broke the 10min barrier for the first time when she crossed the line in 9:58.16 to finish in 11th place from a field of 17. Previous DVAC women to break the 10 minutes for the 3000m distance were Shania Murray and Jesse Mayne. Fieke now takes the DVAC club record for the Women Under 19 & Women Under 20.
