AVSL ROUND 5 DVAC RESULTS & OTHER DVAC RESULTS

VALLEY BLOWS TO THE TOP IN ROUND 5
The Meadowglen Stadium is well known for the windy conditions that seem to prevail at the venue. The wind that persisted throughout AVSL Round 5 on Saturday 19 November was by far the worst experienced in an AV Shield League meet. Rarely was there a moment of relief from the constant battering. Despite this, there were still 74 (36 women/ 38 men) who braved the conditions & earned a total of 46,534 points and a position on top of the Premier Division ladder for Round 5. Essendon came in at second on 40,370 points & Eaglehawk third on 38,609 points.
WE KNEW THE WIND WAS STRONG BECAUSE …
- Tents were a problem. The AV Tents were being weighted down by officials who seemed about to go wind surfing at times. In the end they had to give up the fight and pack it up. The DVAC tent was set up in a hollow, tethered to a tree and the fence … and it was wrecked by the force of the wind.
- A number of discus throws into the wind produced odd flight patterns like taking right angle turns.
- So many sprinters ran the fastest 100m of their lives with the tailwind reading between 2.0 and 5.4.
- The 400m runners talked about running up & down on the spot in the back straight.

SPECIAL MOMENTS
There not always pb’s or Club records, but these moments were special in Round 5:
- Beat your Buddy! I’m sure that there were many examples of Beat your Buddy going on around the venue but at Meadowglen two examples were: Erin Maloney & Georgia L’Estrange train together & often find themselves in the same heat. In Round 5, Erin was sailing away to a glorious victory in the 1500m until Georgia came from the clouds to sneak past. Both racked up another pb!
- Beat your Buddy (2): When Lyal Douglas & Jeff Young line up in a 400m you know there’s something on the line. This week Lyal Douglas reigned supreme with a faster time, but there’s no doubt that the battle will continue.
- Welcome to the Valley: Lara Brooks (WU14) made a great start to her athletics career in difficult conditions. Lara ran 15.39 for the 100m and 89.3 for the 400m.
- The Highs & Lows in the Life of an athlete: Olivia Sheens (WU18) had gone under 13 seconds for the first time, 12.93 (with a wind of only 2.0) but later suffered a painful ankle injury at the Long Jump. Ouch!
- Courage Award: Adam Smith (M40+) suffered a broken leg in a Motor Bike accident recently, but came along to Meadowglen to help out at the Long Jump.
TEAM RESULTS
Two DVAC teams claimed top spot in the state for Round 5 in their division, one DVAC team finished the day in second place, and two others finished in third place for Round 5.
The Women Under 16 team had only SIX members of the squad of 15 compete to produce a score of 5,749 points to head all 31 WU16 teams across the state. The girls competing were Amelia De Benedetto, Vanessa Smith, Ally Brooks, Poppy Scot-Dalgeish, Mackenzie Genders & Georgia L’Estrange. Heroic stuff!
The Men 40+ team had 18 of the squad of 30 compete to produce a massive score of 11,289 points to head the state against all 43 other teams in their Division for the round.
The DVAC Men Under 18 team finished Round 5 second on the State ladder to achieve their best result for the season. Helps when 5 of the hugely talented sprint team go under 12 seconds for the 100m.
The DVAC Women Open team finished 3rd on the State ladder as did the Women Under 18 team.
Other DVAC Team results were as follows:
Women: W40+ 4th/ 30 teams; WU20 17th/26; WU14 4th /26 teams
Men: MOpen 6th/38 teams; MU20 27th/30 teams; MU16 9th/38 teams; MU14 19th/32 teams

THE LIFE OF RILEY … just gets better
When Riley Neecowen, MU18, won Heat 2 at Meadowglen in a new pb of 51.28, the chance of Riley getting the Men Under 18 National qualifier of 51.14 was just around the corner. If he could post a time like that in the winds of Meadowglen, then all that was needed was a race in good conditions.
Turns out, the corner was very close. Like two sleeps away!
At the High Velocity Club, Meet #1 at Doncaster on Tuesday 22 November 2022, in perfect conditions, Riley was clocked at 50.83. Sydney here we come.
There were four DVAC athletes who ran the HVC meet at Doncaster.
Keely Boyne & Maddy Meagher combined to cross as second women’s team in this rarely offered relay. They completed the 200m in 24.82.
