AVSL ROUND 4: SPRINTERS TAKE THE VALLEY TO THE TOP

Published Sun 10 Nov 2024

SPRINT TEAM LEADS VALLEY TO THE TOP IN ROUND 4

The quality of the DVAC sprint team in Round 4 of the AVSL season helped to propel the Valley to the top of the Premier Division table by the end of competition. Eight of the club’s sprinters notched up scores of 400 points or more with their work over 200m with other sprinters contributing valuable points. By the end of Round 4, DVAC was on top of the Premier Division table with 52,703 points and 4,702 points clear of the second placed team, Eaglehawk who remain at the top of the season ladder. To challenge for the season title DVAC still needs to keep a winning streak alive and then to rely on maximizing its Powerplay later in the season. There were 78 Valley athletes on the results list for Round 4 with 36 Female and 42 Male athletes either at the Doncaster or Murrumbeena venues.

ATHLETICS … THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

A highlight of Round 4 was the winning form of DVAC’s Masters athletes who won four of the six age divisions for the Round. DVAC headed the Age Group tables in the F40, F50, M50 & M60 divisions. The F40 & F50 teams have consolidated their position on top of the season ladder while the M50 and M60 teams will edge toward the top in their divisions. Well done to the members of each team:

TOP TEN TALENT

DVAC was well represented in the top ten MVA lists for each of the age groups. Out top ten talent was headed by Luke De Biasi (M60) who led the valley MVA points list with 1202 points. Luke gathered these points through his Shot Put – 10.41m (341); 200m – 27.66 (418); Triple Jump – 9.76m (383) and 4 x 400m Relay (60).

THE STRANGE ATTRACTION OF THE STEEPLECHASE

Why do they run through water in the steeplechase?

The countryside would also require runners to jump over various barriers over the course of their race. These included stone walls and small rivers. When the race was modernized, the walls were simulated with hurdles and the rivers and creeks were simulated with the water pit.

Seven DVAC athletes took on the Steeplechase event at Doncaster and from all accounts it was no picnic in the country!

Blake Barnes (MOpen) won his division in the 3000m Steeplechase (91cm) in his second best time, 10:10.2.

Ethan Armstrong-Bourne (M18) was impressive in his first attempt at the 2000m Steeple (84cm) and lodged a national qualifier and club record with 6:21.8 to score a massive 439 points. This was after Ethan had run a personal best time of 2:00.89 in the 800m and scored 407 points!

William Quigley (M16) set out with the intent of posting a national qualifier (6:45.0) in the 2000m Steeplechase (76cm) and fell agonizingly short with a finishing time of 6:46.9.

Scott Barnes (M50) finished in second place in the M50 division, crossing in 13:00.2.

Kate Ryan (F40), Meg Nicholls (F40) and Liv Nicholls (F16) had made a joint pact to do this event beforehand and drew great support from the Valley crew on the Hill and those around the Water Jump. All finished undaunted by the experience. Kate picked up top points for the F40 team with her time of 10:42.2.

WELCOME (BACK) TO THE VALLEY

Lalith Udugampala (M50), Kirra Wright (F18), Matthew Hall (M50), Darren Rudd (M50), Damien Cusack  (M40) all returned to compete for DVAC in Round 4 and made a huuge contribution to the success of the day.

Jerome Nu’U (M14) wore the Valley colours for the first time and put the 3kg Shot a distance of 13.41m.
