AVSL ROUND 2 - VALLEY ON THE RISE
Published Mon 14 Oct 2024
VALLEY RISES ON PREMIER DIVISION LADDER
The Diamond Valley Athletic Club finished Round 2 of the AV Shield League season at the top of the Premier Division scores for the day and will move into second place on the season ladder. The total score accumulated by the DVAC athletes rose from 37,000 points in Round 1 to 53,442 points in Round 2. The contributing factors for the improved score included the increased turnout, the more local track at Doncaster, an influx of new members, and much better weather conditions.
There was a total of 80 DVAC athletes (39 Female & 41 Male) in action at the Doncaster and Glenhuntly venues. This total included 11 athletes competing for the Valley for the first time. These athletes were Victoria Lindores, Lori McLeod-Mills, Anu Conley, Danike Coppola, Edie Raso Michael Goddard, Leon Gray, Janusz Kubicki, Elliot Williams, Harvey McGregor and Christos Kozaris.
Added to the new members who competed in Round 1, Bec Quigley, Georgie Ritchie, Sarah Holmes, Jesse Littlehales, Daniil Rauzin, Charlie Cooper and Jett Hollingsworth, the impact of the Valley’s recruits has been significant. In Round 2 17 of these athletes contributed over 9000points out of the Valley’s total of 53,442.
VALLEY TEAMS UP FOR THE RELAYS
DVAC sent 13 Relay teams out to compete in the 4 x 100m Relays at Doncaster. Given the nature of the Shield competition, a lot of the organisation was still taking place as the call for clubs to nominate their teams came in. Team captains, Greg Luck & Lyn Davis were working under pressure but there was a genuine spirit of cooperation around the Valley tent. In the end, two of the teams took to the track with a member missing when the final call was made. Such is the pressure of the 4 x 100m Relay!
The two standout relay teams came in the Open Women’s and Open Men’s teams. Olivia Sheens, Vanessa Smith, Tara Smith, Keely Boyne finished 2nd in 53.72 and Jarryd Cripps, Daniil Rauzin, Asher Andrews and Hayden Moon finished in 47.57 to cross in 2nd place.
The scoring DVAC Relay teams added a valuable 2,434 points to the Valley total.
NEWS FROM THE TRENCHES
Female Open: 6th/ 29 teams
How lucky is DVAC to have such great role models as Keely Boyne (Fastest 100m for Open Women – 12.10) and Shania Murray (4:50.4 for the 1500m). Lucinda Derrett gets the season off to a great start with the Hammer Throw, sending it out 34.18m.

Daniil Rauzin is proving a super inclusion this season after a break of 5 years. In Rd 2 Daniil ran the 100m in 13.18; ran a leg of the Relay; threw the Javelin 32.65m before tackling the 400m. He completed the journey in 66.33 but said that the last 100m was a challenge.

Not to be outdone, Ethan Armstrong-Bourne produced a pb effort of 4:11.9 in the 1500m to score 402pts. Zoe Ryan led the results iin the Hammer Throw (40.64m) and ranked third in the Shot Put (9.30m).
M16: 2nd/ 30 teams
What a talent laden squad DVAC has in the MU16! If we ever get all 20 members turn out at the one event then look out. In Round 2 Charlie Cooper led a super team of sprinters with a 12.65 100m and 56.59 400m. Nicholas Tomkins lowered his 1500m time to 4:26.7. Max Davidson blitzed around the track seven and a half time to head the 3000m Walk in 13:37.0. Jaime Hvalica was second in 16:26.9. Toby Hamilton can jump long as well as jump high. He pushed his best ever jump out to 5.51m. Chehan Udugampala led the DVAC throwers in the Shot Put (13.30m), Hammer Throw (35.87m) and Discus (36.60m).
F14: 13th/ 34 teams
At last there is a team growing around Aylaa Arunan. In Round 2 Jamie Ritchie scored a massive 451 points with her run in the 100m of 12.99. Eadie Raso opened her account with DVAC in the 400m with an excellent 69.43. Aylaa had her best result with DVAC in the Triple Jump breaking the old club record with a distance of 9.76m. This effort was scored at 416 points. Aylaa’s total score of 1,057pts achieved from the Triple Jump, 80m Hurdles, & Discus ranked her as the second highest score by a DVAC athlete.
M14: 16th/ 29 teams
Second week that Jesse Porter drops a pb. This week Jesse got his 100m time down to 13.27. Josh Corden does the 100m & Long Jump and then steps up to help the U16 team make a relay. That’s teamwork!
F40: 1st/ 24 teams
Watch this team fly! Victoria Lindores & Lori McLeod-Mills have their first outing in Valley colours and make valuable contributions. It helps the team when Briony Rheuben throws the Hammer 47.81m and score 412 points. Kate Ryan and Meg Nicholls round out a team that covers most events.
M40: 1st/ 30 teams
A team of six athletes cover 15 events to score a total of 3,946 points to finish on top of the M40 ladder for Round 2. Colin Newman has commenced the season in ripping form – no pb’s on Saturday but each of the three throws was close to his best results. New member to the team, Leon Gray, joins in the 4 x 100m Relay.
F50: 1st/ 26 teams
A team of four tops the ladder in Round 2! Mind you the 4 athletes covered 10 events in Round 2 as well as Relays. Well done to Rebecca Quigley, Sarah Gittins, Paula Merino and Gaelyne Kenshole. Gaelyne cleared 2.45m in the Pole Vault.
M50: 5th/ 25 teams
A team of six athletes amasses a total of 2,691 points to rank as the 5th best team in a highly competitive division. Arunan Arumainayagam did four events on the day but only got to score in three so his 18.65m Hammer Throw went unscored.
F60: 10th/ 13 teams
Jo Moxon ran the 100m, 400m, 1500m & a Relay – all on the day before she ran the Melbourne Marathon! Jo finished the Marathon in 4:59:24. Congratulations, Jo.
M60: 3rd/ 24 teams
Never before has the Valley had a M60 4 x 100m Relay team so it was exciting to witness the team of Greg Luck, Luke De Biasi, Greg Champion and Michael Goddard establish a DVAC club record at 59.68. Luke De Biasi achieved the highest score for an individual event in Round 2 by a DVAC athlete when his best Long Jump was measured at 5.03m and scored at 452pts.
