AVSL ROUND 1 - BRAVING THE ELEMENTS

Published Sun 06 Oct 2024

AVSL RD 1: VALLEY ATHLETES BRAVE THE ELEMENTS FOR A POSITIVE START TO THE SEASON

Round 1 of the AV Shield League season was a wild ride for the Track & Field athletes who faced conditions more commonly associated with Cross Country. The athletes at Aberfeldie had to cope with bursts of heavy rain and wild winds that seemed to peak as Ella Littlehales (F20) was running in Heat 2 of the Female 800m’s. Despite the atrocious conditions, Ella typified the spirit of the 66 Diamond Valley Athletic Club athletes (28 Female & 38 Male) by battling through to a brave finish. The club’s total of 36,788 points earned by the endeavours of the athletes placed it in third position on the Premier Division ladder at the end of competition.

This spirit was carried right throughout the day and was further reinforced by Blake Barnes (M Open) in the final event of the day, the 5000m. Blake built a commanding lead and won the race in 16:49.6.

SPRINT SQUAD TOP OF THE CLASS

The Valley Sprint team starred in Round 1, notching up the three highest scores on the day. The scoring system used by AV had changed this season and the explanation is listed below.

Jamie Ritchie, F16, led the times for her age group in the 200m with a 26.74 and attracting a score of 460 points. Jamie said later, “I was pleased with that run. It’s only a fraction off my best time.”

Katie Oliver, F20, won the first Heat of the Women’s 200m in clocked 25.80, attracting 427 points, but the person snapping at her heels was our own Rebecca Hvalica, F16, who crossed in 25.95, and given a score of 457 points.

Oli Oldfield, F16, travelled down to the Casey venue where she won the top heat of the Women’s 400m in 60.61 to earn a score of 453 points.

Other Sprint athletes happy to log up a personal best for the 200m at Aberfeldie included: Meg Nicholls, F40, 36.48; Bec Quigley, F50, 37.64; Liv Nicholls, F16, 31.40. Liv Sheens, F20, won her Heat in a time of 27.50.

Jesse Porter, M14, topped the results for the 200m in his age group with a time of 26.60.

World Athletics Scoring Tables to be used as basis for AVSL Scoring

Final scoring based on WA Scoring converting to AVSL Point Ranges – e.g. 1400 WA points equates to 600 AVSL Points, 1000 WA Points equates to 500 AVSL points. Etc. to Lowest AVSL Scoring from 2023/24 season to be 100 AVSL points irrelevant of World Athletics minimum scoring distance.

LUKE DE WONDERFUL

Luke De Biasi, M60+, still has records appearing in local High School athletics programs, but the wonder is that his talents appear to have only sharpened over the years. Luke was the standout DVAC athlete in Round 1, scoring a total of 1157 points for his club, well clear of others. Luke amassed the total with his efforts in the Triple Jump, 10.23m (407pts), Shot Put, 11.04m (357pts) and the 200m, 28.32 (393pts).

Top points earner for the Valley female team was Gaelyne Kenshole, F50, who collected a total of 971 points through her achievements in the Shot Put, 8.87m (360 pts); Triple Jump, 7.48m (333 pts), and 200m, 34.84 (278pts). As well, Gaelyne threw the Discus 19.59m, but only the top three points events get to score.

TOBY HAMILTON KEEPS RAISING THE BAR

Nothing special in Toby Hamilton (M16) doing things that probably should not be possible – after all Toby had to jump 5cm higher than he had ever done before to win the 2024 Australian M15 Championship in March with a leap of 1.84m! But to clear 1.81m at Aberfeldie on Saturday in those conditions? That is definitely an impressive achievement. And … definitely worth every one of the 414 points it was awarded.

MIDDLE DISTANCE PACK FORMING

The results in the 800m and 3000m races at Aberfeldie suggest that DVAC is building an impressive squad of middle distance athletes.

In the first Heat of the Women’s 800m, DVAC had three starters: Matilda Johnson, F16, 2:20.6, Grace Robinson, F16, 2:29.6, and Georgia L’Estrange, F18, 2:32.4. Matilda Johnson’s run was scored at 441pts, to place it as the third highest individual score for the day.

In the Under 18 Men results for the 800m, DVAC had 4 out of the top 12 results: Ethan Armstrong-Bourne, M18, 2:02.2; Glen Imbriano, 2:08.1; Thomas Short, 2:08.6, and Joshua Fitzgerald, 2:09.3 were all strong performers. Glen Imbriano slashed 12 seconds off his previous best time for the 800m.

Jarryd Cripps, M Open, opened his season’s account in a positive manner with a 2:08.6 in the 800m. Dylan Littlejohn, M40, led the times for the 800m in his division with a time of 2:17.8.

Ethan Armstrong-Bourne, M18, later ran the 3000m in a personal best time of 9:09.8 to lead the times for DVAC. Jett Hollingsworth, M14, ran strongly in the 3000m to finish in 10:33.2, the third best time for the M14 group.

At the Casey venue, Patrick Knight, M18, opened his season with the 1500m and clocked 4:33.66.

WELCOME TO THE VALLEY

The Diamond Valley Athletic Club was pleased to welcome a number of athletes to the Track & Field team for the 2024/2025 season. The athletes making their first appearance included: Sarah Holmes, F16; Georgie Ritchie, F16; Rebecca Quigley, F50; Joshua Fitzgerald, M18; Charlie Cooper, M16; Harvey McGregor, M16; Jett Hollingsworth, M14.

And … welcome back: it was great to welcome Daniil Rauzin, M Open, back to the Valley after a break of some 5 years.

THROWERS UNITED

Bruce Wood, M70, set a new DVAC club record with the Shot Put when he landed a put at 10.35m.

Keira Sanchez, F20, led all results at Shield in the Shot Put with a distance of 10.65m. Keira was also the 3rd best in the Discus with 25.74.

Lucinda Derrett, F Open, launched the Hammer a distance of 33.61m at the Casey venue to rank second for the comp.

Ines Caton-Smith, F16, led the age group with the Javelin, with a best distance of 26.17m.
