AVSL RD 6 GIVES VALLEY POLE POSITION

Published Mon 05 Dec 2022

VALLEY IN POLE POSITION: CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE LOOMS

There were 72 DVAC athletes (37 Women & 35 Men) who contributed to the DVAC score of 41,761 points for Round 6. This was enough to put DVAC at the top of the Premier Division ladder for the day with Essendon in second place on 35,242pts & Eaglehawk in third place on 32,035pts.

With four top position finishes in the Premier Division out of the six rounds to date, the Diamond Valley Athletic Club should expect to be going into the Christmas break full of confidence. A true test of DVAC’s claims to success in this season’s AVSL Playoffs over two weeks in March 2023 will be faced in Round 7 on Saturday 17 December 2022 when DVAC faces up to Essendon on their home patch. The last time this happened was in Round 1 and DVAC finished 2nd to Essendon. DVAC has won 4 of the next 5 Rounds and has a 5 point margin on top of the season ladder.

Make your plans to get across to Aberfeldie now for the Twilight Meet on Saturday 17 December 2022.

AVSL Playoffs & Promotion/Relegation

AVSL Playoffs this year will take place across 2 consecutive weekends held at 5 venues (3 Country & 2 Metro) across Victoria allowing athletes to compete and contribute points in their nominated events.

Each club and athlete will have something to play for during the AVSL Playoffs this year with the top 5 teams in each division playing off for the AVSL divisional Shield. The bottom 5 teams in Division 1 through to 4 will competing to avoid relegation.

Across the two weekends of playoffs, athletes will be able to contribute points in 3 individual events and 1 relay on weekend 1 and weekend 2. This new format of Playoffs will allow greater opportunity for participation and incentive to compete for success, survival or relegation!

The Playoffs will be held at Doncaster & Glenhuntly on Saturday 18th March 2023 & at Aberfeldie & Yarra Ranges on Saturday 25th March 2023. To compete in both programs athletes must have a ranking (ie have done that event at least once). The draft Timetables for the Playoffs are now available on the AV website.

CLUB RECORDS

  • Heidi Kuppler, fresh from winning the Australian Schools 10 Years 1500m title in Brisbane lined up for the 3000m in the stifling heat at Doncaster with the ambition of breaking 11 minutes. Heidi crossed the finish line in 10:40.0 to well and truly achieve that goal but also to set new DVAC club records for the Women 13 Years & 14 Years age groups.
  • Peter Van Der Kamp, worked hard to claim the Men 50-54 DVAC 800m record in Round 4, setting the new club record at 2:13.32. Two rounds later, Peter smashed his own club record bring it down to 2:10.1.
  • Gaelyne Kenshole, equalled her own DVAC club record for the Pole Vault when she cleared 2.65m.
  • Rob Wendel, set a new DVAC club record for the Men 65-69 in the 800m when he completed the two laps in 2:48.5. (psst: Rob is the current President of Athletics Victoria).

WELCOME TO THE VALLEY

Chehan Udugampala (MU14) made an impressive debut with the Diamond Valley Athletic Club in Round 6. Chehan has followed his father, Lalith to the Valley. The Men U14 team is starting to make a valuable contribution to the club score each week & Chehan will certainly help this along.

Hannah Hvalica (WU16) made her first appearance with the Valley on the weekend and showed talent in her 100m 13.90. Welcome, Hannah.

SPECIAL MOMENTS:

  • Fieke Van Der Kamp (U20), ran a 10:09.65 at the Australian Schools T&F Championships in Perth in December 2019. Three years later, that pb for the 3000m has been replaced with a 10:07.0. In a wonderful exhibition of controlled power running, Fieke held on to the pace despite the heat. Well done Fieke.
  • Damien Clifford (40+) said after his Shot Put: That’s the first time I’ve done Shot Put since Little Aths. Welcome back, Damien!
  • Bianca Eiting-Brown (U18) after her pb 11.40m put with the Shot: “I got the glide & hip turn right.”
  • Charlee Dickson (U18) knew she must be close to the qualifier for nationals (72.14) after her 400m Hurdles. The relief was visible when Results Hub finally came up with the time of 72.09 for Charlee’s run. Sydney here we come!
  • Ally Brooks (U16) went out with all guns blazing in the first heat of the Women’s 800m. The result was a 2:16.10, Ally’s second fastest 800m. Little wonder that the run was scored at 521 points. Ally went on the run the 200m in a pb time of 28.00 (415pts) and ‘cruise’ around the 3000m in 10:37.0 (493pts) for a total score for the day of 1,429 points that topped the scores for DVAC on the day. Ally is now off to Brisbane for a week of Schools Volleyball. Good luck, Ally.
