PASS MARK FOR THE VALLEY AT THE TURN
The Diamond Valley Athletic Club is having a good season. At the half-way mark of the season the club is sitting in second place on the ladder in the Premier Division with 9 of the 16 age-groups that cover the male & female competition in the top three across the state. The dream of adding a third season consecutive premiership to the two previous season victories in the Premier division lives on. Everything would have to go right in the run home, but the club should be proud of how well it is performing. DVAC finished in second place in Round 5 with 66 athletes (25 female & 41 male) amassing a total of 43,488 points.
In some exciting developments, the Female U16 and the Male Under 16 teams have moved to the top of their age group ladders for the season. They join the Female 40+ & Female 50+ teams who are also on top of their Age Group ladders. The other DVAC teams in second place on the ladder include the Female U20, Female U18, Male 40+, and Male 50+.
In Round 5 the DVAC Age Group teams finished in the following places on their ladder:
Female Age Groups: Open - 16th; Under 20 - 16th; Under 18 - 1st; Under 16 - 2nd; Under 14 - 19th; 40+ - 1st; 50+ - 4th; 60+ - 6th.
Male Age Groups: Open - 12th; Under 20 - 7th; Under 18 – 15th; Under 16 – 1st; Under 14 - 13th; 40+ - 3rd; 50+ - 1st; 60+ - 1st.
JUNIOR BIG HITTERS IN ROUND 5
The top 4 points scorers for DVAC in Round 5 were all junior athletes who helped the Valley to their second placing in the Premiership Division. Kirra Wright (1,132), Elliot Williams (1,102), Zoey Ryan (1,028) and Vanessa Smith (1,012) were the only athletes to score over 1000 points for the Round.
Kirra Wright, a T36 athlete, claimed an Australian record in two events in Round 5. In the 100m Kirra (U18) was clocked at 15.74 to claim the vacant Australian record for the FU17 T36 classification. The quality of this run was reflected in the score of 460 points attached to it under the AVSL scoring system. Kirra claimed a second Australian record in the Shot Put. Kirra has not always loved the Shot Put event. She has even referred to the Shot Put by another name. Not any more though. At Ballarat on Saturday, Kirra set a new Australian record for the U17 T36 classification with the 3kg Shot Put when her best distance was measured at 7.22m. This attracted a score of 317 points while her 400m, run in a time of 80.98 was given a score of 355 points.
Some day’s work! Kirra topped the MVA points score for DVAC with a total of 1,132 points.
Elliot Williams (MU16) athletic talents were on show at Aberfeldie as he worked through a full program: Elliot did the 100m Hurdles (14.9/ 399pts), Long Jump (5.40m/ 366pts) and the 100m (12.59/ 337pts).
Zoey Ryan (FU16) is stepping up her work over the sprints to match her quality work with the Throws. In Round 5 Zoey worked through the Hammer Throw (42.02m/ 344pts), Shot Put (9.48m/ 334pts) and the 200m (29.66/ 350pts).
Vanessa Smith (FU18) showed her versatility as an athlete when she included two jump events and only one Throws event. Normally the Throws events occupy most of her time on a Saturday. Vanessa still came up with big scores on each event when she did the Long Jump (3.64m/ 301pts), High Jump (1.38m/ 351pts) and the Javelin (38.72m/ 360pts).
LEADERS OF THE PACK – DVAC TOP PERFORMERS:
Sprints: Keely Boyne (F Open) led the 100m times for the venue in Rd 5 with another sub 12 second performance, clocking 11.55. Hayden Moon (M Open) continued his good form with a run of 11.47 in the 100m.
400m: Daisy Whyte (FU16) held her place in the top heat of the 400m and clocked 61.94. William Quigley (MU16) followed his pb in the 1500m with an excellent showing in the 400m, leading the DVAC times with 59.33.
1500m: There was a rush of pb’s by Valley juniors in the 1500m, but Ethan Armstrong-Bourne (MU18) led the charge with a new pb of 4:04.2. Georgia L’Estrange (FU18) ignored the heat to keep pushing on, clocking 5:24.7.
Walks: Sarah Holmes (FU16) braved the heat to do the 3000m Walk and still finished in 17:26.8. Jaime Hvalica (MU16) coped with the absence of his usual sidekick, Max Davidson, by leading the age group in the 3000m Walk with a time of 17:38.9.
Throws: Bruce Wood (M60+) set a new club record for the M70 with the Shot Put with his best distance of 10.86m. Hanna Rowe (F16) and Zoey Ryan (F16) shared top honours for their age group in the Hammer Throw (Zoey 42.02m) and the Shot Put (Hanna 10.37m).
Jumps: Liv Nicholls still managed to clear 1.43m in the High Jump after a busy program on a very hot day. Arunan Arumainayagam (M40) pb’d in the Long Jump (4.17m) as well as in the Discus & Discus and Javelin. That’s a good day’s work!
WELCOME …
The following athletes competed with the Valley for the first time in Round 5: Crissy Patroungas, Athenasia Patroungas, Leon Gray. Welcome!
CHEEKY …
Darren Corden (M50) developed a headache in the running of the 400m at the end of the day. The cause of the headache … his son, Joshua (MU14), who ran the lap giving dad a running commentary including, “I didn’t know you were this good, Dad.” Josh ran off from Darren in the closing stages of the race.
