NEW AGE … NEW CHALLENGES: LUKE DE BIASI’S RECORD SPREE

Luke De Biasi (M60+) has been setting records right throughout his highly decorated career in athletics and Round 5 of the AVSL season was no exception. Having recently moved onto the 60+ age group and finally getting back to full fitness after a battle with injury over the last month, Luke was able to set a M60+ Victorian and Australian record in the 300m Hurdles as well as setting new DVAC club records in the Triple Jump and the Shot Put.

The 300m Hurdles record had sat at 45.19 for the past 20 years until Saturday at Aberfeldie when Luke scorched around the track in 45.13 to claim both State and National records. Luke’s best Triple Jump was measured at 10.62m, only one centimetre off the Victorian record that set in 1981. “That is definitely gettable,” said Luke, “that was my first Triple Jump in three years”. Luke’s third event in Round 5 was the Shot Put where his best effort was measured at 11.07m. All three results posted by Luke go into the DVAC record books for the M60+. Luke’s scores for these three events resulted in a total score of 1481 points and a listing as the Most Valuable Athlete in Victoria for Round 5 of the AVSL.

Luke’s appetite for athletics continues as strong as ever. Luke plans to continue his build up toward the State and National Championships with an emphasis on having a shot at the Australian Pentathlon and Australian Decathlon points records as well as the Long Jump. Beyond that, Luke plans to compete at the World Indoor Championships in Poland or at the US Indoor Championships in March and then to compete at the World Masters Championships in Sweden in August 2024.

What is Luke’s secret to setting elite standards at 60+? Simple … hard work. Luke does Gym 3-4 times a week and Track 3-4 times a week. What about setting records and then having them ‘broken’ by someone else? “You know what? I’d like to see any records I set get broken. That would mean that maybe I have inspired others to work hard enough to break them. Then, I would know that the sport is in a healthy state going forward & I would be happy.”

BRIONY RHEUBEN

Another DVAC athlete to set a State record was Briony Rheuben who launched a massive throw of 48.91m with the 4kg Hammer to claim the Victorian record for the F40 age group.

DVAC WINS THE POINTS IN ROUND 5

The Diamond Valley Athletic Club managed to claim top spot in the Premier Division of the AVSL with a total of 43,600 points. The ten points earned for the top of the ladder effort sees DVAC still in second place on the season ladder, some 9 points behind Eaglehawk who have already played their Powerplay round. There were 75 DVAC athletes competing (37 Female & 38 Male) across three venues in Round 5. The DVAC teams in Female 40, Female U18 & Male 40+ finished on top in their respective divisions.

DVAC has now finished in top place for 4 of the 5 Rounds of the AVSL season so far. Nearing the half-way point of the season the DVAC teams in the Female Open, F18, F16, and M40+ are all on top of their division ladder while the teams in F40 (2nd), M16 (3rd), & M20 (2nd) are up in the top three places.

THROWERS UNITE

The Hammer Throw circle was a happy hunting ground for the DVAC Throwers.

Zoey Ryan (42.90m), Hanna Rowe (38.03m) and Amelia Di Benedetto (23.11m) were ranked 1, 2, & 3 in the F16 for the Hammer. Zoey headed the results for the age group.

The DVAC F18 Hammer Throwers, Vanessa Smith (39.72m), Keira Sanchez (48.85m) and Tara Smith (40.99m) were ranked 2,3, & 4 in the F18 Hammer results. Alexia Moxon (16.52m) made it 4 out of 8 F18 Hammer Throwers in the State for Rd 5 and earning a total of 1,484 points between them.

  • Jack Daley took to the Steeplechase like a ‘duck to water’ in Round 5. Running the 2000m Steeplechase for the first time, Jack negotiated all obstacles in a very respectable 8:51.6.
  • Jo Moxon snuck past her ‘friends’ right on the finish line like a stealth bomber and recorded a new pb of 3:22.78.
  • Elyssia Kenshole moved to a new ‘stiffer’ pole in Round 5 & still managed to clear 3.70m. Wait till it all comes together with a longer run up … maybe at the Zatopek meet.
