AVSL RD 5: LAST ROUND BEFORE THE CHRISTMAS BREAK WILL BE VITAL FOR THE VALLEY

Published Sat 11 Dec 2021

LAST ROUND JOKER BEFORE THE CHRISTMAS BREAK WILL BE VITAL FOR THE VALLEY

The Diamond Valley Athletic Club consolidated its hold on 4th place in the Premier League of the Athletics Victoria Shield League with another mighty showing in Round 5. Altogether 57 DVAC athletes took to the field of competition and scored 39,836 points. DVAC finished 2nd for the round in the Premier League. The average point score for each athlete went up from 692 in Round 4 to 698 in Round 5. The result means that we further close the gap on the top three & widen the gap on the teams below us.

Round 6, the last Round of AVSL before Christmas is HUGE for the Valley. Yes – it’s our JOKER round where we double the points of the position we finish on the ladder for the round. Finish on top and the 10 points becomes 20. So, it’s all hands on deck! A good result will determine if we can qualify for the 2021/2022 AV Shield Finals to be held on Saturday 5 March 2022 by staying in the top four.

TOP PERFORMERS LEAD THE VALLEY CHARGE

Two of the Valley athletes to achieve some amazing feats in AVSL Rd 5 were:

SAMUEL ABOLENCIA: Samuel, 15, will need a 11.34 to get to Nationals next year and in Round 5 he went oh so close when he clocked 11.60 to lead the Valley times for the sprint event. This effort was scored at 446 points. As well, Samuel did the Long Jump, 5.33m (364pts) and the 400m 55.78 (378pts). This put Samuel fourth on the MVA list for the Valley. Great round, Samuel.

ALLY BROOKS: Ally, 14, is coming back from a lengthy break due to injury, and her performances in Round 6 suggest that she is hitting top form quickly. In the 1500m, Ally went out with a plan & stuck to it perfectly, crossing the line in 4:50.9 to earn a massive 483pts. In the 400m, Ally clocked a personal best time of 62.84 to earn 448pts while her run of 14.18 in the 100m added 324pts to bring her total points for the day to 1,255pts, putting her 3rd on the Valley MVA list.

THANKS TO ALL CLUB HELPERS IN AVSL ROUND 5 AT ABERFELDIE

So far the Valley has not missed a beat in filling all of its Club Helper duties as required by AV. In short, we are good citizens in the athletics world. But … the jobs need to be shared around. If you have not appeared on a Club Helper list as yet, do consider putting your name forward for Round 6. My experience on the 5:30pm Long Jump Pit #1 was a very positive one. I thought my spiking was first class (well, no one complained!) and Jarryd Cripps pull throughs with the tape was exceptional. It is always fun.

The DVAC Club Helpers for AVSL Round 5 were:

Greg Luck, Keira Sanchez (x 2 shifts), Adam Scott (x 2 shifts), Narelle Genders, Shaun Genders, Tony Lander, Jamieson Lander, Bronwyn Neecowen, Paula Merino, Max Balchin, Jarryd Cripps, Cyril Dixon, Rob Wendel, Lyn Davis

Ps: Thanks always to David Armstrong who arrives early & sets the DVAC tent up in prime position. Also, thanks to those kind people who helped pack it all up & wheel it up the hill back to the Valley trailer.
