RECORD SCORE IN ROUND 4 ... VALLEY STRIKES

TWO ROUNDS BEFORE THE CHRISTMAS BREAK WILL BE VITAL FOR THE VALLEY

The Diamond Valley Athletic Club consolidated its hold on 4th place in the Premier League of the Athletics Victoria Shield League with a mighty showing in Round 4. Altogether 67 DVAC athletes took to the field of competition and scored a club high 46, 3829 points. DVAC finished 2nd for the round in the Premier League. This means that we close the gap on the top three & widen the gap on the teams below us. Two more weeks

The next two rounds, leading up to the Christmas break will determine if we can qualify for the 2021/2022 AV Shield Finals to be held on Saturday 5 March 2022 by staying in the top four.

Round 4 Photos

Remember, if DVAC does make the AV Shield Finals then each athlete must have competed in THREE rounds of the AVSL 10 round season. They will also need to have competed in the events on the AV Shield Final at least once throughout the season in order to qualify for the competition.

TOP PERFORMERS LEAD THE VALLEY CHARGE

Two of the Valley athletes to achieve some amazing feats in AVSL Rd 4 were:

KIRRA WRIGHT: Kirra, 13 Years old, broke the Australian T38 Para Records in two events at Knox last Saturday. Kirra broke 80 seconds for the first time in the 400m to set a new T38 Australian record for Women U15. Kirra completed the lap of the track in 79.45 seconds to score 485 pts. In the Long Jump, Kirra set a new Australian record with her best jump measured at 3.75m. This effort was scored at 499pts! In her 3rd event, Kirra completed the 100m in 16.36 to close in on the Australian record of 15.75.

LUKE DE BIASI: Luke finished 2nd in the M55-59 category with a massive total of 1,363 points scored from his three best events. Luke events were the Shot Put, 10.23m (479); 200m 27.17 (449) & the High Jump, 1.40m (435). To complete the day, Luke ran a leg of the 4x400m Relay with the M50+ team. Great work, Luke.

Q & A with KEIRA SANCHEZ

Keira has just turned 15 and is in Year 9 at Loyola College.

Q: Hi Keira. Great result yesterday with a 47.04m throw in the Hammer. How did that unfold?

Keira: In the first 3 throws I landed 43m, 44m and then on the third throw I landed one at 45.14m. That was a 2 metre pb so I was very happy. I got three extra throws & had a fail on the first throw before getting the 2nd throw out for 46m. My coach (Andrew Stirling) who was refereeing at the nearby Shot Put ring said that I should go full out & faster on the last throw. I did that and was very excited to land a throw at 47.04m.

Q: That is way over the Athletics Australia Qualifying standard of 33.00m set for the Under 17 Hammer Throw. How did you go at the State & National Championships last year?

Keira: I finished 3rd at the Vic Champs and 7th at the Nationals but I would like to do better next year.

Q: Your Mum, Paula, has joined the Throws training group this season and broke the 20m mark with the Hammer at Keilor for the first time. Who had bragging rights on the way home?

Keira: We shared the ‘joy’ as we had both posted big pb’s. It’s been fun having Mum join in at training and I enjoy helping her with some coaching tips.

Q: Technically, what are you working on to get better?

Keira: I am working on trying to develop a three turn throw. I am still using a two turn throw.

Q: What goals have you set for yourself in the coming months?

Keira: I want to get a 50! A 50m throw with the 3kg Hammer would be really cool.

Q: Do you have any superstitions before you throw?

Keira: At Keilor I wore my Reindeer socks and Snowflake earrings. When I wear the Snowflake earrings at training I usually throw much better.

Q: How do you rate the four throws disciplines?

Keira: For me it’s Javelin (4), Shot Put (3), Discus (2) and Hammer Throw (1).

Q: If you had to make a commercial to promote Hammer Throw as a sport, how would you do it?

Keira: I would say that the Hammer Throw is like being on an amusement ride. The adrenaline hits you while you’re in the ring. Your whole body comes alive.

Q: You have a great group in the Throws squad. Who in the squad do you think is most likely to be Prime Minister? Who is most likely to play a practical joke?

Keira: I mean absolutely no offence when I nominate Lucinda Derrett as the most likely to Prime Minister and Emma Butler as the most likely to play a practical joke.

Thanks Keira for your generosity & good luck with the three turn throw!
