AVSL RD 4 AND THE VALLEY POWERS UP

Published Sun 13 Nov 2022

VALLEY POWERS UP FOR POWER PLAY

With DVAC entries for AVSL Rd 4 running high, the decision was made to make the Valley Power Play and attempt to earn big points toward the season tally. After a valiant struggle with Eaglehawk, the Valley had to settle for 18 points instead of 20 points. The final score line saw Eaglehawk on 52,387 points to DVAC’s 50,550 points. The indication of the mighty effort by the Valley can be seen by the next club in the Premier Division for Round 4 being Essendon, who scored 35,395 points.

The 79 athletes (44 Women & 35 Men) who turned out for AVSL Rd 4 appeared as a ‘Green Wave’ at the Doncaster venue, with many of the events on the program being dominated by the Valley. There were DVAC Officials & Club Helpers in abundance and the ‘mob on the hill’ gave vocal support to our athletes throughout the afternoon. Our athletes all gave their very best efforts with many setting new ‘personal best’ standards in their events.

ALLY’S ALL-STAR DAY

Ally Brooks, WU16, led the charge for DVAC with a remarkable series of performances at the Doncaster venue. Ally’s day started by running her fourth 800m in the past week including her thrilling win in the WU16 800m at the Victorian All Schools Championships where she set a new personal best time of 2:14.95. At Doncaster, Ally still managed a 2:22.57 to earn 483 points. In the 200m, Ally lowered her time to 28.04 to earn 413 points. The current All Schools 2000m Steeplechase title holder was well clear of the field when she crossed in 7:32.7 to earn 501 points. To top off a great day, Ally ran to first leg of theWU16 4x100m Relay that completed the 400m in 56.64. This gave Ally a share of the points (93) to bring her points total for the Round to 1,490 – the highest by a DVAC athlete for the season & the second highest for all athletes in the state.

TEAM RESULTS

Three DVAC teams claimed top spot in the state for Round 4 in their division and two DVAC teams finished the day in second place.

The Women Under 18 team had 11 members of the squad of 15 compete to produce a score of 7,383 points and lead the second placed team by 2,500 points. Tara Smith was at Doncaster but had to watch on in a Moon Boot after a Netball injury.

The Women Under 16 team had 10 of the squad of 15 compete to produce a score of 7,719 points to head the state in their age group for the round.

The DVAC Men 40+ had an emphatic win on the day, scoring 13,366 points and a break of 2,500 points over the next club, Essendon. There were 20 athletes from a total of 30 who competed in Round 4.

The DVAC Women’s Open team finished Round 4 second on the State ladder as did the Valley Under 20 Women’s team.

Other DVAC Team results were as follows:

Women: W40+ 3rd/ 34 teams; WU18 1st/32 teams; WU14 5th/25 teams

WELCOME TO THE VALLEY

The continued growth in registered athletes at the Diamond Valley Athletic Club has reached an exiting point. In the season before Covid, 2018-2019, DVAC reached a total of 146 athletes. The current total is 144. It seems certain that the club will finally break the pre-Covid total. How welcome is that!

In Round 4 of the AVSL, DVAC welcomed four new athletes to the club.

Lucy Johns, WU14: Lucy made the transition from Little Athletics to seniors an impressive one by running a pb in her first race. Lucy finished the 800m in 2:58.00 and recorded 36.00 for the 200m. As well, Lucy made a Women Under 14 4 x 100m Relay team with Teagan Corden, Zoey Ryan & Hanna Rowe.

Alan Abolencia, M40+: Last season, Alan thought that his son, Sam should not be the only one having all the fun by competing with DVAC. So in Round 4, Alan ran the 200m (34.51) and ran a 4x100m Relay.

Craig McMillan, M40+: Craig has had a hankering to throw the Javelin for some time now & in Round 4 he realized his dream. The result – a throw of 36.55m that earned a score of 447 points! Some dream! As well, Craig threw the Discus 22.18m.

Erin Maloney, WU18: Erin’s father, Brett, was a long serving DVAC athlete as well as a club Treasurer so it was a double welcome when Erin came to the Valley. Erin plays Women’s football & showed all the courage required for that sport when she took on the 2000m Steeplechase as her first individual event in Round 4. Erin completed the event in 8:52.2.

It was also good to welcome Alannah Hoffman, WU18 & Zack Lambie, MU18 back to the Valley in Round 4. Alannah ran the 200m in 29.40 and Zack ran the 100m in 12.05.

SPECIAL MOMENTS

There not always pb’s or Club records, but these moments were special in Round 4.

Elyssia Kenshole (WU20) does Pole Vault: nothing newsworthy in that; after all, Elyssia is a national champion in Pole Vault with a pb of 4.26m. Thing is, this was Elyssia’s first attempt to Pole Vault after a long break through injury. Elyssia cleared 3.50m off an 8 step run up and could not have been more happy.

Jamieson Lander (WU16) does 400m Hurdles: The national qualifier for Jamieson’s age group (U17) is 72.14. Always a fluent athlete over the Hurdles, Jamieson looked at home in her first attempt at the 400m Hurdles and crossed in 70.36. Super! Charlee Dixon (WU18) is set to join Jamieson before long, clocking 72.90 in Round 4.

Alexandra Mills (W Open) throw the Discus a long way: Again, nothing special in this, except that Alex threw the 1kg Discus out for 43.00m to set a new DVAC record. The previous best throw for Alex was 42.44m in Round 1. Alex is edging to a national qualifier that sits at 44.00m. The WU23 qualifier is 40.00m.

Alexia Moxon goes over 2.00m in the Pole Vault: First time over 2.00m – enough said! Alexia has only just started her Pole Vault career.

Blake Barnes breaks 10minutes for the 3000m Steeplechase: This was late in the day, but well worth watching. Blake put on a demonstration class on how to clear the Water Jump. One foot just getting wet. A gruelling event, it seems worth more than 411 points! Blake’s previous best time for the event was 10:25.8.

Peter Van Der Kamp claims the Men 50-54 800m record. We know that Peter is having a great season – 2:41:25 Melbourne Marathon. Peter has approached this Club Record with the same meticulous planning that he approached the Marathon. Peter ran the 800m in 2:13.32 to break the Chris Lynch record of 2:13.50.
