Published Sun 22 Oct 2023

PAORA POWER SENDS SHOT INTO ORBIT

Diamond Valley Athletic Club field athlete, Paora Okirua, 15, stepped up to his first competition for the current AVSL season in Round 3 and quickly demonstrated why he is a national Shot Put champion. Competing in the Shot Put at the Casey venue, Paora best effort with the 4kg Shot was 18.13m. This was the first time over 18m for Paora and was scored at 526 points on the AVSL points system. It sets a new DVAC club record for the Men Under 16.

In March 2023, Paora won the Men Under 16 Australian Championship with a put of 17.62m He is keen to defend his title as an Under 17 athlete at the National Championships in 2024. Paora is also looking to add the Hammer Throw to his repertoire during this season.

ASHER’S AVERAGE DAY AT THE OFFICE

Life as a Decathlete is not easy. Just ask Asher Andrews (MU18). During the course of the action at AVSL Round 3 at Aberfeldie, Asher competed in 6 of the events that he must face in the Decathlon. Asher listed the following achievements in Round 3: Long Jump, 6.52m (478pts); 100m, 11.42 (468pts); Javelin 50.19m (500pts); Discus 33.98m; 400m 55.52; & Pole Vault 3.20m. Asher posted a personal best clearance in the Pole Vault, improving on his previous best height by 20cm.

As only the three highest rated efforts are counted under the AVSL rules, this still gave Asher a total score of 1446pts and ranked him as third overall on the MVA points for Round 3. Asher led the points tally for DVAC.

PS: The remaining events on the Decathlon for Asher were the 110m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put and 1500m.
