ASHER ANDREWS WINS MEDAL FOR DECATHLON & COURAGE

ASHER ANDREWS – COURAGEOUS EFFORT IN DECATHLON

The Decathlon requires courage at the best of times, but when you suffer a serious Hamstring injury in the second event and you still have eight events to go, then you will not complete the Decathlon unless you are blessed with extraordinary amounts of courage. Asher Andrews, competing in the Victorian Men’s Under 18 Decathlon at Bendigo last weekend, suffered a hamstring tear on his third jump in the Long Jump, and still managed to register a result for each of the remaining events and win the Bronze medal. This followed a pb effort of 6.73m on his second jump!

In the 110m Hurdles and the 1500m Asher had to concede that lining up at the start line and stepping forward on the gun was the best he could do. Somehow Asher still managed to clear 1.01m in the High Jump, clear 1.20m in the Pole Vault, throw the Javelin 36.98m (and finish second), throw the Discus 24.00m. These heroic efforts allowed Asher to qualify for the national Men Under 17 Decathlon. An amazing effort.

Let’s wish Asher a speedy & complete recovery before he takes on the Men Under 17 Decathlon at the 2023 Australian Junior Track & Field Championships in Brisbane that will begin with the 100m at 9:00am on Thursday 13 April 2023.
