2022 DVAC BINNAK BOWL HANDICAP REPORT

WENDEL ‘ROB’S THE BOWL AT BINNAK
Fresh from handing over the reigns as DVAC President to Matthew Thompson, Rob Wendel had an extra spring in his step at the 2022 DVAC Binnak Bowl on Saturday 4 June. Given a Handicap of 3:55 by the club Handicapper, Greg Luck, Rob set off at a consistent pace that delivered him the lead in the 4th lap and from there he was able to hold out a fast closing pack, led by Merlina Hession until the finish line.
Rob’s laps were so consistent that he would be in line for the metronome award if one existed. Rob went through the five 1km laps in 4:31, 4:41, 4:39, 4:39 and 4:28 for a total of 22:59.
The return of Merlina Hession to competition will strengthen the Valley Open Women’s team. Merlina crossed in second place in a time of 20:54. The quality of the DVAC Open Women’s team is evident when you add Merlina’s strong run to that of Shania Murray, 20:05, Jessica Campbell, 20:17, and Voula Sheens, 20:48.
Frank Portelli, 22:51, was third over the finish line.
Caden Murray, 16:09, is getting stronger with each run & while he had to wait for 13min & 52 seconds after the front marker set off, he still managed to catch seven runners on his 5km journey. Caden flashed around the first lap in 3:00 and he was still able to pump out a 3:11on his final lap. The course record is held by Tim Logan who completed the 5km in 15:41 in 2018.
A total of 19 runners completed the 5km Handicap event.
Matilda L’Estrange won the 3km Handicap event in a time of 11:23. Dylan Vidanapathirana continued his rapid improvement this season with a run of 13:43 for the 3km and second place. Heidi Kuppler clocked the fastest time for the 3km with 11:22 and took out third place.
There was a total of 13 runners in the 3km Handicap.
